I had a full day off today.  After lunch with some local modelers, we all went to another local HO modeler's house.  This modeler has increasing dementia, so it was a now or never trip before his dementia gets worse. It was great meeting him and getting a tour.  And wow, he is a craftsman. He lives in a barn. One third is his extensive woodworking shop (he was a cabinet maker and professional ship modeler), one third is his layout, the the last third is the living quarters. Not a bad setup. 

The first thing on the layout I noticed was the finest liftout I have ever seen. And I've never seen a double liftout at all. It is motorized. Just press a smaller red button and it's done (the big red button is the emergency stop). I took thorough photos of it's construction.  Here are two.





Next, this evening I installed more backdrop sections on the layout I'm constructing. I also built a hidden shelf in the corner behind the backdrop to hold railroad memorabilia.

This Weekend - Come on out!

This is the large "N Scaler Gathering" event that used to be held in Egg Harbor NJ.
We lost the sponsoring hall, so the New Jersey Southern Model Railroad Club is now sponsoring it in Magnolia NJ, just minutes from the Philadelphia Delaware River bridges. We have club participations from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and of course New Jersey.

N-Trak, T-Trak, and Free-Mo layouts are running. You can bring a train and run on any of the layouts.
Around 15 vendors are also selling their railroad wares and admission is free!

Having lived in Cincy for a while but moved out west, it's nice to see the Cincinnati Eastern Terminal again.  That's the old N&W "Peavine" that used to run from Cincy to Portsmouth, OH (but stops west of the Scioto River at the quarry these rock trains go to/from).  Looks like a couple new(for them) SD40-2s, and the old B30-7 (or is it a B23-7?) that was in mothballs now rolling.  The youtuber "Jaw Tooth" is kinda infamous for going where he isn't really supposed to around there, although it's not like a lot of railfans don't do just the same.  He does get some interesting videos.

Milwaukee's only E6 set, the Fast 15, is in charge of today's Fast Mail.  The North Shore's Electroliner passes overhead on Keith Kohlmann's "Oklahoma Ave" Modutrak module.  While on display at the show last week, a guy walks up, points to the Prefex factory, and says, "that was my office window!"

Last weekend Michael (Dayliner) and I travelled to Calgary to take in the annual Supertrain show with over 75,000 sq ft of displays and booths.  We visited the Trains And Such hobby shop (excellent!), caught up with some Alberta friends, and visited Grant Eastman and his Southern Alberta Rail layout.  Lots of great modelling on display.

Yesterday I hosted my first operating session in eight months following track painting.  This was also the first session with the new master fast clock.  The layout and equipment performed well considering the long hiatus.

A 34 car Vancouver -Peace freight brings cars back onto the layout at Chetwynd:




A nine car NAR Train 51/52 also brought cars onto the layout at Dawson Creek.  The train is powered by my NAR GP9 and a CP Rail GP9 belonging to Michael (Dayliner):




Mike brought his two Rapido BC Rail Budd cars along for a passenger extra, seen here preparing to depart Chetwynd for Dawson Creek:

I finished up the Marathon gas station for Norwood.  Unfortunately, this aspect will be facing the backdrop and the rear of the building the only part visible.  The masking of that blue stripe was a challenge--micro strips of Tamiya tape.  That stuff is fantastic.


I printed up these dwarf CPLs, these, like the larger CPLs I tested out before, also accept 0201 LEDs so we'll see how that works.  Sorry for the blur but being in Z these are tiny.  The "approach" aspect is blanked out to keep it relatively simple for me.


I received these new Z-scale Atlas autoracks and applied NS decals I designed to make them fit the layout a bit better (although GM in Norwood closed down long before these autoracks hit the rails..) 


Finally, I painted/decaled this 45' Trailvan, shown being pulled by one of the new AZL day-cab tractors.  Seen here eastbound on Norwood Ave.

For painting stripes, such as on your gas station, it's sometimes easier to use a decal.  I always do that on GN Big Sky Blue passenger cars.

MicroTrains heavyweight cars are increasingly difficult to obtain on the used car market, and even harder new. While waiting for a relaunch by Atlas, I turned to the 3D drawing board and puzzled a modular design together, based on my existing MTL "copycat" HW coach. This is Pullman Plan 3917, a parlor car built in large series. Mixing the basic elements (windows, doors, blind spaces), it may be possible to design any Pullman Plan of this era.

I was building out the interior of my White Pine Electric office. 1995… some computers, some typewriters. A little paperwork added to a few desks. Then @Sokramiketes gave me the idea for a small scene in the building…

I hear ya, I contemplated this but couldn't find any suitable decals in my box (I contemplated using cut-down Conrail logos) and wasn't patient enough to design some and wait another week or so.. it turned out well enough, in any event.

Karl, that paint bucket scene is hilarious.  I feel his pain.  Another idea would be someone in the corner of a room with floor painted all around them.
