Randgust: You're not the only one still kitbashing, and scratchbuilding, the old-fashioned way.
This is that same trap into which we fall repeatedly... We--the Railwire faithful--are not really a representative slice of the hobby writ large. We tend to be heavily skewed toward the craftsman side of the hobby by nature of this forum and its purpose.
Polling the folks over at Trains.com (not to bash them), I think you'd find far fewer scratchbuilders and kitbashers as a percentage of the membership.
I think it's more common for a hobbyist to buy something because it looks cool (hence the ridiculous number of Big Boys from every manufacturer in every scale) than because it's an obscure model of an obscure prototype he happens to model and needs to complete his roster.
