This is probably to cater to the "micro-layout" types (they're more micro-diorama's). It's very popular in Japan and whole genre's dedicated to it. Almost everything is based on the Tomy-Tec and Kato small chassis systems. This is no different, just something to have fun.

I am tempted to get a pair, and put them on either end of a couple of the old Arnold-Rapido shortie streamline cars- a sort of "diesel Electroliner". 

When I first saw them ( a newsletter that arrived April 2), I thought they might be an April fool's joke.

But fun, and $30.  I think I'm in for one or 2.

Like the Pocket Line steeple cab, these are entry level models, as the price indicates. No window glass or lighting, just a chassis and shell. Hopefully it will be another “gateway drug” to the hobby. I like it that Kato is thinking outside the box.

Going by the color (and translucency) of the unpainted shell, it is either 3D printed or resin cast.  It is more of a inexpensive toy than a scale model.

Point taken, but this crude shell is unlike the Steeple cab, which has typical Kato crisp tooling:

Not going to argue with you there.  Point taken, but in Kato’s defense, whoever painted those shells did an uber-sh!tty job.  Look at the other photo on that site: a paint fillet in the triangular window and globby paint along the bottom edge of the shell.



That shell may not be nearly as bad as it would seem buried under a horrible paint job.
