I think we are arguing past each other without knowing the correct architectural terms. Victorian is an era, ie when Victoria was Queen of England, 1837-1901. In America, Victorian architecture is generally post Civil War: 1870-1900. Gingerbread isn't a style of house, it is a decorative part of a house. Its the ornate trim, particularly along the edges of roofs and porches.

It's a strange choice to start with if they actually do have the IHC line. Pretty much any of the other stuff would've been more universally useful.

I have dug up my (still unbuilt) kits and you are correct, they have lower level garage and the tall stairs.  So the Walther does appear to have the IHC tooling and just changed the name from Gingerbread to Victorian.  Well that is a good news as they likely have tooling for the other IHC kits (including the Ferris wheel and carousel with moving horses).  Those are very useful kits for someone modeling carnivals.

The other thing that fooled me is that as I mentioned photo Walthers provided appears to show the H0 version those kits are slightly different and have finer details than the N scale kits).

I understand. I was simply using the name IHC was selling these under that series of structures, not  the actual architectural names.

I also noticed that in my IHC kit's box is "Made in Denmark", which pretty much confirms it was molded by Heljan.  I wonder if Walthers got the molds from Heljan and sent them to China, or if Heljan is molding them for Walthers.

Ed, don't forget it's Walthers and N scale we are talking about. They've been denying us useful models for big industries for Cape Cods and Colonials, and Fast Marts for years now.

As an added point, across the South the Victorian style house was very popular with the management folks in the mills. From Danville VA to Kershaw SC to little spots across GA and AL there were usually a street full of Victorian houses anyplace where there was some significant industry. The mill owners and their senior managers built houses n the Victorian style and then anyone who came into money and wanted to show it would copy the style with their home. In many places these are run down and falling apart but in others they have been kept up and are beautiful to see.

These houses are very much Victorian era. Many of these houses are survivors of SF's Great Fire. While not 'Victorian' in the decorative sense, they were age-appropriate. And you will find the gingerbread-encrusted simple houses mixed with what most would consider Victorian - with turrets and the like. In San Francisco this was because, in the early 70s, there was a significant movement to save remaining Victorian architecture  and many of the houses were literally moved to groupings, such as the Painted Ladies and surrounding houses, and this is how they got garages. Because by the 70s we were an auto culture and, since it was easier to lift a house onto a raised level base from a flat bed rather than lower it and SF has a lot of hills where these houses were being placed, so why not throw in a garage in that height.


If anyone wants Victorian houses I see 3D models on eBay sometimes, but they're a bugger to paint.

Yeah, I wish that more 3D designers would design their models split into separate parts for painting. Trying to paint tiny details in recessed areas (like porches with columns) is pretty much impossible in N scale.
