More design work from last week's PRR X40b boxcars.  I realized that the B end had an indentation up top for the brake wheel housing.  Much fiddling later, it's done.



This X41 photo shows it well.

About one year past, I bought this old C-C bay window caboose at a show.  The reason that I bought it was that someone had added a cupola to it.  He did such a good job that I had thought that it came that way.  I posted a "What is this?" to a Weekend Update.  Several posters pointed out that it had to be a bash.

I wanted to run it on my non-historic railroad but wanted to do something about the clunky ladder side rails.  I had a Gold Medal dress-up kit designed for the MP bay window.  As I had used one set of end railings to do something about the end railings on a B-mann caboose (the kit had enough for two cars), I expected that with a little surgery, it could dress up the C-C caboose.

The first photograph is the Gold medal and railngs and ladder on the B-mann four wheel caboose. 





The rest of these are the dressed up and bashed C-C caboose.












The roofwalk, end railings, brake wheel/stand and ladders are from the Gold Medal dress-up kit.  The original roofwalks are not bad[ only slightly clunky.  The original end railings are  not bad, especially for the era of manufacture.  According to Spookshow, these models first appeared in the 1960s.  As my chassis is marked "Sekisui/Con-Cor", I suspect that this is an old one.  As one of the photographs show, the ladder side rails are a bit clunky.

On the original, the end railings/ladder are affixed to a plate that covers the couplers and keeps the spring in place.  I had to clip off the railings/ladder from it then affix the Gold Medal end railings/ladder to the end of it.  Retention of the plate is necessary to keep the coupler spring in place.

As purchased, the smokejack appeared rather small/low.  I was going to replace it with a MT but upon examination of the underside of the roof, I saw that someone had pushed it down far.  I pushed it back up with a nail set and left it.  The marker lamps are from a Kato mikado detail parts bag. 

 The ride height is fine, so I left it.  The glazing is Micro Kristal Kleer.  Some swear by it; some, at it.  I do neither but use it for lack of anything else.  The reporting marks and number are MicroScale.  The safety slogans are from a generic caboose set that Rail Graphics sold prior to its going out of business.

The character of my non-historic demands wood cabooses but this is an unusual piece, so I am running it.  I guess that I will have to invent a back story that SC&N Management finally listened to the crews' complaints about the rough ride of the four wheelers or the two truck cabooses that ride on arch bars.

Another possible explanation:  The SC&N was negotiating some type of joint operation with a connecting railroad, and needed a caboose suitable for interchange.  The joint operation never materialized, but they still have the "modern" caboose.

Coming to an end with the sawmill build.  Finished the....

The Puffing Billy Railway is very cool place, yes they do ride sitting on the sills with their legs hanging out. I visited in 2015 during the N scale convention was in Brisbane. Everyone at the railroad was very friendly, and got invited up on the footplate. The engineer took me across the tracks so I could get a picture of both departing morning trains, one was double headed with a Garrett. The next day we visited I got invited for a cab ride for two stops. We visited the layout of Alan Rocket who modeled the Puffing Billy line I believe on On30, some of the best modeling I have ever seen. He was in his 80s then, there were already plans to save the railway once he passed in a museum near the rear railway. Great Trip! Gordon

Not a lot of modelling time this past week, but made a start on detailing the underframes for my museum train tank cars, starting with Gold Medal grab irons and sill steps:

Looking forward to seeing the finished tanks, as the intricate detail incorporated into the digital models is spectacular.

On the Conrail OCS front, I was hoping to have CR 9 finished by now, but I had to redo some components and redesign the circuitry.  The model should be in paint at least by the end of the weekend, and the electrical work finished during the coming week.  In the mean time, I resumed work on CR 1.  I printed observation platform railings on NH Flying Cloud and they came out extremely well, so I'm incorporating the railings in the subsequent models rather than removing the floor from the MTL end railings (which is a very tedious process) as I did for CR 10.  CR 1 had the extended pass-through with scissor gates (as it usually was in a mid-consist position).  It also had diamond tread on the platform floor, which I'm going to attempt to simulate.  If the relief renders, painting it will not be fun either.

Upgrading old Atlas whalebelly tanks. I'll keep the Suburban Propane as is, but the other cars will be Sherritt Williams.

Plugging away on some 3D printed Z scale projects.. I resized the T-scale B&O standard station to Z.  It needs separate windows in Z, and it seems like the first crack they are too large, eh?  Door are separate pieces as well. The idea is to fit clear styrene to the windows then add to the main body.  It'll also be easier to paint.   


I also updated the T X-67 boxcar to Z, this was a test but there's another one on the printer.  Those handrails will shrink to be straight.  The frame will sit higher (body lower).
