Wheels of Time/RailSmith Commissioned Cars.

I haven't seen this anywhere, so sorry if it's a repost.

As part of the RailSmith "Build a Train" series, Lowell is commissioning WoT to make some of the headend cars.

Lowell mentioned this to me a while back, this is the first time I've seen them listed.  I'm happy to see the IC cars with a better color and correct striping vs. the releases WoT did in the past.

My question on these - do the Wheels of Time 'commissioned' cars match the Railsmith cars in terms of paint and lettering.  I have a number of the Wheels of Time baggage cars from earlier runs, and their color choices sometimes leave something to be desired in terms of accuracy.

 Did he have enough control on color to be certain they would match the cars he's producing himself?

Yep.  Agreed on all points, and yes, that's where Lowell leveraged his skills in matching colors and printing to his runs.  The IC cars are gorgeous color wise, and the ACL isn't faded purple like before.  I'm happy with the ones I bought.

On the IC cars, not only is the color better, but also corrected where the yellow stripe doesn't go to the bottom of the car side.  I hope he finds a reason to do coaches some day to replace the purple-ish MTl cars.

I have the GN, IC and all three Rock Island cars.  All look great, but as said roll rough, but then that has always been my experience. I am very curious about the origin of the Rock Island “aluminum” color and how accurate it is. It looks more like a match for CB&Q F units. I asked in the Rock Island groups io and had no response. Any insight would be appreciated.

The Rock “modernized” and painted silver a bunch of head end cars to run with Rocket lightweight sets.

The two I have from this release are way more white than silver. More along the lines of the very early passenger scheme E units.

That’s when they painted them like that. We’re talking like the “Choctaw Rocket.”

 Ack when there were a lot of model railroad paints available, there used to be a cold called “Rock Island Aluminum” that was pretty danged close to the color on these cars.
