That’s when they painted them like that. We’re talking like the “Choctaw Rocket.”

 Ack when there were a lot of model railroad paints available, there used to be a cold called “Rock Island Aluminum” that was pretty danged close to the color on these cars.

I don't know about Rock Island but other railroads used a color called "imitation aluminum" which was a non-metallic light gray color.  In similar fashion there was also non-metallic Dulux (imitation) gold paint used by some railroads. That one had a hue similar to gold leaf, but not metallic.

I didn't check but I suspect that Tru-Color paints have imitation aluminum paint available.

After receiving my RI cars I had the same reaction. It's clearly a white color and not silver, like the roof. It looks like in the earlier run of this scheme the cars look more silver. I hope to purchase one and compare them. I'm not jazzed about white cars, even if they are accurate. I'd like to see more photographic evidence though.

Any idea how close the Railsmith colors are to the Micro Trains L&N Heavyweights?

I believe the Railsmith blue is a bit darker (but more correct) than the Micro Trains cars.

I run them together.

One thing (I'm not sure if it's been brought up.....I didn't go back and look).....exact paint match is kind of a fools errand anyways.  Cars sat outside in the sun and faded at different rates.  You're always going to have a little variation in the shades of colors, especially darker ones. 

On Texas Special and Frisco cars, the red would almost turn to a pinkish tint because of the hot Texas sun.

Unless colors are totally different shades, I think the slight variations make everything look more realistic.

I use Krylon Dull Aluminum rattle can spray paint for my silver cars (such as Rock Island).
