Weekend Update 2/26/23

Craig---those Malahat pictures really take me back.  I loved hiking up to Niagara on a Sunday afternoon and waiting for the Dayliner to come down from Courtenay.  Here's a picture I took on one of those afternoons.


Tim--good progress at Sundance!

Altohorn--love the Milwaukee Road power.  If I wasn't modeling the CPR, I probably would have gone with the Milwaukee.  It was my "hometown" US road, with a line into Port Angeles WA, just across the water from Victoria.

On my own layout, I made good progress this week towards completing the wiring for Lake Cowichan.  I have extended both the track and auxiliary bus from the wiring board under east Lake Cowichan, connecting the last feeder wire to the track bus.  Here the new connections are in place, running from the junction box through new holes drilled to allow passage to the area under Lake Cowichan proper.


This is how it terminates on the other side.  Once the Lake Cowichan wiring is complete, all I have to do is install the track board  and made the bus connections here.  The hole on the left is the former passage hole for the track bus.


Then I ran the auxiliary bus back to the power supply which is mounted under the layout with the track power supply and command station.  The buses are now completely independent of each other and everything is working well.


The next step is assembly and installation of the switch machines, and then the project is complete operationally (but not aesthetically).

That’s an awesome picture of the Niagara bridge. First time I’ve seen a shot that far back from up stream.

I’m reroofing my Seaboard Air Line station.  I had originally used decals printed to look like diamond-shaped shingles, but, while this was effective on the N scale version of this station that I built six or seven years ago, the decals lacked texture on this HO scale structure.  I found laser cut diamond shingles from Bollinger Edgerly Scale Trains (Best Trains) that are working really well.  It’s slow going to do it right, but it’ll be worth it.  I have two sides of the roof almost finished and am working on the ridge caps up the hip between them.

Chris, when you first posted your photos of the new project it rang a bell. Whiteground Models, I believe that's the correct name, once made a white metal version of that car. From what I recall of the castings yours is light years more detailed, and they had no provision for powering. Look forward to seeing a video of it running.

I am playing with structures and negative space on my trackplan.  New long term standins have been build for two of the foreground structures, and the buff building has gotten a coat of paint and some extra details.

Ed:  Unless it's stenciled for a particular use, you can load the V&O car with almost anything.  The Dayton area had (has?) steel mills, and related industries, so steel and pipe loads are likely.  Many of those loads would head out West, so a return load of lumber or wallboard would also be fine.

I got back to some standard gauge T scale stuff this week (although a little scenery was also done on the White Pass Route)  Here's a test fitting parts for a CN CO7 coach I designed a while back, this iteration features window glass and interior which actually shows up through the windows, so it's worthwhile I suppose.  It's been primered and a little light sanding to the roof where some layering was barely visible.  "Weight"--or rather, adhesion--is a square/flat neodymium magnet in the floor.  A few adjustments are needed to improve how it goes together but so far so good.  Will probably paint it in CN Grey/Black to start.

Kitbashed one of the new Atlas Light Poles as a test. Going to need a lot more on top of some refinement.

I made some progress on the Housatonic River scene, in New Milford.  I was able to get some ground cover down, along with vegetation along the river banks.  Still more to be done and a few more photos in my layout thread. I need to add some surface ripples to break up the mirror effect.  Edit: I also need to slide the bridges to the right a bit to center the bridge shoes on the piers.  They were just put in place for the photos.

Got a video of The Charlie Vlk Memorial train at the Madison, Wi show from weekend before last. Led by some Southern Alberta RR locos and carrying business cars of a lot of the Modutrakers

I have a shot somewhere of the exact opposite of that shot.  From the top of Mt Fin that is in the background.   Hiking in Goldstream is one thing I do miss from living on the South Island.  Also waking up to the sound of the Dayliner horn and going Oh Sh$t I am AWOL from work as it reached Admirals Road crossing at 0830 every morning as it passed the Naval Barracks at Naden.
