I had to laugh when I saw that MicroTrains was coming out with Sherman tanks on flat cars.  I don't even really have much of a use for them, I was just using them as test prints on my Mini 8k.

I’ve been working on a bridge for one of my E&N modules.  It’s one of the two large canyon crossings in the Malahat mountains and I’m excited as this one is partially on a curve which has been an interesting challenge. The scariest part was attaching the rails as it wasn’t as simple as just gluing them in the middle due to the geometry of the transition curve on the one end. But I did that today with success. Things are really progressing nicely. It’s at the point now where it’s about ready for paint and a whole lot of weathering. Looking forward that!

I’ve made some more changes at Ophir on my HOn3 Rio Grande Southern First District. Gone is the old 18”/16” radius turnout, in favor of a 24”/19” turnout. That required quite a bit of reconfiguration of all the track work at Ophir. I also removed some trees that didn’t correlate well with photographs, and then added some more details and a talus slope. I also have a Banta kit coming to replace the old Classic Miniatures depot.

I’ve been working on a bridge for one of my E&N modules. 

I rode over that bridge in February of 1985 during my first vacation away from home:




This was a great week of progress for me as I was able to complete the tracklaying at Septimus.

My previous Fort St. John Subdivision including Septimus was about 11 1/2 feet long; the new version is around 25 feet long.  Previously we were able to send an eleven car train to Septimus; the new siding capacity is fourteen cars and the tail track will be able to accommodate three locomotives instead of two.

Now to attend to all of the wiring underneath the benchwork!

I've been working on my drawing and printing. The boiler is for a Santa Fe 2-10-2 and the tender is from an early challenger. These are just test prints i wanted to try before going crazy on adding all of the details.
The boiler slides onto the kato mikado mech and fits snug!

I'm liking this modeling/production thing.

Not new, but I thought you guys would get a kick out of this.  When I started building my layout nearly 20 years ago, the idea was for an all steam D&RGW layout set in the early '40s.  Since this is my first layout, I had unrealistic, and grand designs of heavily kit-bashing steam locos to represent Rio Grande steam power.  As I was building the layout, I upped that date to the early 50s, the middle of the transition era, conceding that having some diesels would just be easier.  Over time though, I had horrible experiences with N scale steam.  I had a Bachmann 2-8-0 for example, that I returned to Bachmann twice, and then had repaired at the old Caboose Hobbies in Denver twice, and it still ran like crap.  And then there was the Life-Like 2-8-8-2 with an unsolvable intermittent short.  After my experiences with steam frustrating me to the point of not wanting a layout at all, I finally settled on October 1956 as the date I'm modeling.  Why that very specific date?  By then there were only 2 steam locomotives operating on the Moffat Tunnel portion of the line, the last of the mighty 3600 class 2-8-8-2s, #3609 and #3612.  I decided to have what I call Implied Steam then.  I bought a couple of steam locomotive tenders, applied decals to the rear, used pieces of solid styrene to represent the dog houses (with the window drawn with a black Sharpie), and weathered just the rear of the tenders.  I then place them with their rears sticking out of the roundhouse.  So, yeah, steam is still represented on my layout set in October 1956, a few weeks before #3609 and #3612 were retired permanently.  As for my representations, the real tenders had 6 wheel trucks, but with the roundhouse doors blocking the view, the viewer can't tell.  Purists will notice that even the rear end view isn't correct, but for me, it's more about the visual effect.  Anyway, sometimes it's fun to cater to a bit of illusion.

So you are making a ATSF 3800 class 2-10-2? Would love to see a separate thread on your progress. BTW your shell looks awesome!

yes, thats what ill be making. i might start a thread but its a pretty standard build.

ill be adding those details to the shells. these were test prints to check fitment and scaling before adding all of the finer details to the drawing.
