Yeah, perhaps. If I ever need to do a major tune-up or have the shell off for some reason, I may try to add some more weight.

No, I wouldn't have any problem telling you apart.  One has a beard, one doesn't, so even if seen singularly there shouldn't be any confusion.

Sure Sam, that should work too. Just make sure the piece of metal is thick enough for few turns of threads. Actually, I might try that myself next time I need to trim the screw to a custom length.

Another easier solution is to just buy shorter 00-90 screws.  There are several sources out there.  Assuming of course that the available lengths will fit the particular application.
I also have very good flush-cutting pair of cutters, and I have cut the protruding part of the screw after installing it on the model. But there has to be enough clearance around the screw to do this.  This works with brass screws, but steel screws (that MTL currently uses) might be too hard for those delicate cutters.

When I was still gainfully employed, I had more than one occasion to make custom length screws. I used fixtures close to what you described. I still have my old piece of steel angle with many holes drilled and tapped in it and marked for size. Once you established the desired length, I would hit it on the belt sander. Restoring a proper thread lead on the end was sometimes a challenge however The coolest fixture I ever saw was someone who tapped a series of holes in some bar stock and milled the screw to length. Very precise!

Sometimes you have to abandon principle for functionality.  As much as I loved the Retro look of these old short radius turnouts, one is vintage Arnold, the other a Trix, they just didn't work very well, especially with my old steam.  Fortunately, slightly more modern Peco shorties have roughly the same geometry.  And they let the Force flow through my 0-8-0 a lot better.

With a little ballast replaced I can finally move toward finishing the scenery behind this.
