Or when you're working around the house, and a door needs adjusting or a window is stuck, and you decide that a jeweler's file or a Dremel is the best tool for the job.
This, so many times this.

When airport security pulls you aside and gives you a full body cavity search and is asking you endless questions because you have a coffee can full of dirt in your luggage that you picked up from the area you model to use on your layout. ABQ

When I collected Sherman Hill dirt on a trip to Wyoming, I actually mailed it back home to avoid that problem.

You're traveling to a new state/area and begin a google search for MR stores near your visit.

One of the things I love about The Railwire is that now my first thing is actually posting here "hey, gonna be in town, what should I do and see?".

Not to mention the bag full of sagebrush for tree armatures.

when you hear the word "Atlas", you immediately think of model trains instead of automobile tires, ancient Greeks or "Charles".   :D

So, would 3rd generation start with the SD70?
Or the GP/SD 40-2

4th generation start with the SD70 or the MAC locos

And 5th Generation start with the Tier 4 locos

It turns out you can get black confetti in the shape of d'cks...

I generally think of "generations" as "bought to replace the previous generation".

So, ie, the GP30 came along to replace Fs and early GP7/9s.

I know EMD marketed the SD50 as "two SD50s replace three SD40s" so I think an argument could be made that they're the first "third gen" units.

Things get tricky from there though because NOTHING has really replaced the SD40-2... although, I'd say the SD70M/MAC has filled that role (although really it's the Dash9/AC4400 on most roads).

I can see the Tier 4 stuff being seen as the latest new gen though because it is indeed replacing some older SD70 series.

Of course, this all generally ignores GE, since we KNOW the U25b was the real first second gen unit.

You know you are when you see the 'Big Bang Theory' and know EXACTLY which train store he means by the 'uppity one' in the Pasadena area, and you know you're a railfan when you completely agree with his recommendation on the seating on the Los Angeles - SFO train - left side going up, right side coming back.....
