I will succumb and spend entirely too much to pick up a couple of DL600Bs in Santa Fe, in 800-series blue & yellow. They are iconic for my layout's era and locale, and I have fond memories of enjoying them running through the Tehachapis.

I just resent BLI's little "extortion scheme"; you pay for sound you may not want (or need to replace with a better-quality implementation), or you get nothing at all. Feeding the monster like that just rewards bad behavior.

This is why, with the exception of my first BLI locomotive (an E unit in N scale that does not impress), I do not buy from BLI.  I've standardized on ESU decoders and an ESU DCC system on my layout.  It's one thing to buy a long out-of-production locomotive and have to replace/upgrade the DCC/sound guts just to get that rare locomotive.  It's quite another to buy a new locomotive only to have to tear out the current BLI sound system and pay for and install a second DCC/sound system.  I'm lucky that a number of other manufacturers are now providing factory ESU decoders in new locomotives, or at least I can buy the engines as DCC ready and add my decoder and speakers of choice.

For example, right now, I'm working on an Atlas CW40-8 that I bought on eBay.  It's NOS and is seventeen years old.  Obviously, the QSI sound system from 2004 leaves much to be desired as compared to today's offerings, but I also had to pay only $125.00 for the locomotive.  Once I add the ESU decoder and speaker, I'll only be in the neighborhood of the cost of a brand new 2021 locomotive with DCC and sound, as opposed to buying BLI and being several hundred dollars deep by the time the upgrades are complete.

Yup. Insult upon injury in my case is the limited market for the RSD; with BLI's version, that "franchise" will be addressed and nobody else will produce one. A handful of fan-boys like myself will buy, and the market will be sated. Maybe I can put (less) money where my mouth is and wait for clearance pricing, like what happened with their Centipede. OTOH, Santa Fe schemes will comprise the highest demand, so I may be SOL if I delay and again find myself stacking $$$'s worth of models in my bottomless "needs paint" bucket.

The market may be limited but when you take into account Santa Fe modelers worldwide, and yes I'm not in the US, they shouldn't have any trouble off loading them at least the first run. If you don't want BLI sound there's always atsfnscalemodels RSD15 and RSD7 shells mated to a modified Atlas C630 or C628 mechanism. You can then add ESU Loksound or Tsunami or whatever floats your boat

On my radar, but not on my radar. I don't need another project, I have eight other Alco kitbashes either barely started or just sitting on tables in their original shipping boxes waiting for the round-tuit. I've been able to delegate a trio of RS-27s to a friend's talents, but beyond that the other stuff hasn't been touched in at least two years. 

If I won the lottery I'd start a company devoted to N scale models of Alco power, but the odds of that...

RSD-15 road names not needed if you have a private road . I have been in communication with the president and toilet cleaner of the Wyoming & La Grande , He said buy or I will not let you sleep well . Ahh , I feel like a nap now .

While I'm a PRR guy (even though I mostly model B&O (Long story)), while we are throwing around nice to haves, an EP5, especially in a PRR five strip scheme, just to put beside one of the Lionel version.

How is it extortion?  This is the market they want to fill and they clearly are finding success with their products. That I hope means profit and more offerings to follow.
