Latest scratch build

I added a scale and a cover over it to my coal dealership office.  The ledge that the posts go into will be covered with dirt eventually when the building is planted.  For the scale, I just painted a piece of styrene for now.  I ordered some GMM diamond plate so I can see if that looks better.

Caught the sickness 3 weeks ago and tried to work on a model to keep myself occupied, turned out ehhh. Underestimated the effect some of the shakes and lethargy would have. Managed to snap a few handrails completely and lost 3 Sinclair antennas in the process. Base model was a BNSF B23-7 from the BLW sick pile, which led to some issues I think I overcame. Just needs a cab signal box and plow before I consider it time to to wrap it up with dull cote and conceal my sins with some cinder patina.

So, would the lengthwise boards be what the trucks drove on or would they act like guardrails?

Our familiy's coal dealership Scale was just as described, less the perpendicular boards.
Ours were just 4x12 planks over a scale that was manufactured by Fairbanks Morse.
But, in what Jon is describing, the perpendicular boards would be what the truck drove over.
It was just a wear layer.

The east end of Cedricsburg Yard has languished in this condition for more than a year while we debated moving, put the house up for sale, waited ... and decided to stay put. 



This area is directly in front of the yardmaster's operating position, so yeah, it's been a bit of an eyesore. But while the layout was designed to be transportable, this table would likely have to modified to fit a new space, which is why I was hesitant to do anything with it.

Until recently.



Still more touch-up to do, but it's an improvement.

More photos and stuff going up in the layout thread this weekend. Time to get railroadin' again!

This week's work on the HOn3 RGS:

Here’s my completed kitbash of RGS 7303, a so-called “type II” design. It was a combination of underframe and roof from an E&B Valley D&RGW 5500-series stock car and sides, details, and brake rigging from a Grandt Line C&S/RGS “type III” steel underframe stock car.



A quick two-day build...the Banta Modelworks kit for the Rico bunkhouse.  It’s just propped up for photos here before I “dirt it in” with ground cover.





The “big one.” This is the Ragg’s [sic] to Riches kit for the joint D&RGW/RGS Ridgway, CO depot. Fortunately Ragg offers this kit in both a shortened configuration as well as with the full-length baggage section, because building the baggage section to scale would make it entirely too large for the space. Here I’ve gotten the plywood sub-walls up and I’ve added the wainscoting.

The Climax saga continues with preparation of parts to go onto the boiler, including upper running boards, and the manifold with whistle which goes just ahead of the cab.  Very small parts!




Also drilling holes into the boiler and forming wire parts including front stays, side pipes, downpipes,, etc.:






Not shown here are handrails to be added along the boiler.  I was hoping to mount them with BLMA lift rings but their mounting pin is too short so looking for something else.
