I just saw this through the LocoNotes online mailing list.

The paint job is what makes the thing stylish.  Otherwise it's a slab on wheels.  The nose must be really built solidly (I hope) to protect the engineer and crew at up to 125 MPH speeds.  It seems to me that there is less nose than on a P40/P42 but I am probably wrong.  I don't hate it though.  Hopefully it turns out to be a dependable engine.

Heh, yeah, I suppose it could be worse.

Looks European, but I don't find it repulsive like the new version of Acela they are developing.  Speaking  of which, this loco reminds me of the end units of Acela - seems similar. Acela with a blunt nose.

Is that a Kato coupler on the front?
I like the look of the current livery on the Charger, this is just too much solid blue though.

Similar looking Siemens units have been running San Diego / LA for a while now.  Personally, I like the way they look..

I do not think the paint scheme works on this engine in specific. It looks like the result of trying to mash together an E8, P42, and ACS64 paint schemes all on one (not flattering to those specific colors and poorly shaped for that specific livery) body. The specific colors chosen also make it look like it's made out of plastic, or like a toy, not a 120MPH+ revenue earning passenger locomotive.
I like the Cascades scheme best on these, it fits them well, and Amtrak Midwest suits them too.

Okay, after reading the article and seeing a full side view vs the 3/4 front view, the livery is growing on me. I haven't seen the Charger personally through Salt Lake, but my nephew caught a test train one day coming down Soldier Summit. He showed me video and I really like the ALC42 over the P42.
