Weekend Update 7/12/20

Haven't posted much in a while, between working from home since March and work just being crazy, I haven't had a lot of extra time to contribute.  Things are settled way down with work for now, so I can't use that as an excuse.  When I started working from home, I set up a desk in my basement, in a corner of the room under my main layout (which sits at 54" above the floor).  I figured I might as well fully surround myself with things that calm me as I adjusted to a totally new work experience, so I set up my South Bergen Industrial switching layout next to my desk....


It lets me look at something relaxing while on WebEx meetings or if I just need to give my brain a break.  I can also perform some switching when the urge hits me.  I also had a staging yard module from an old club layout that wasn't getting used, and figured out a way to hook it up to the switching layout so that way I could expand the operational possibilities a little.  I'm not following any specific prototype, but I am drawing from scenes along the Susquehanna (NYS&W) for inspiration, and this picture from Hackensack of the railroad passing through a long cut with the concrete road bridge passing over has always caught my eye, so I decided to take a shot at modeling the scene.


I've built it as a single track, since this is the track that connects the switching layout to the staging yard.  I used slightly modified Rix concrete highway railings for the sides, and cut the styrene sides on my Cameo to make sure I can easily replicate the various cuts in multiple pieces of styrene as I built up both sides.  Still have some more cleaning up to do on the bridge, but I'm pretty happy with it so far:


Finally, we adopted a "pandemic puppy", an 8 week old German Shepherd, that we named Hazel.  I had a Shepherd for 11 years, and it took me a while before I could seriously consider having another one without getting sad over losing my last one.  But the time had come, plus, we're mostly home all the time these days anyway!

Created a load for my second F25 well flat. This is a Fairbanks Morse 38 8-1/8 opposed piston Diesel engine, that was commonly used in marine applications, especially submarines. The engine is available from Shapeways.

Very interesting and  good-looking load Doug!  I'm also wondering if an engine like that would be shipped without a tarp covering it?

After a successful test print last weekend, i'm putting the final details on the body for the Eden Park Baggage. Still need to work on the interior, floor, and diaphragms. Hoping the increase in detail size makes the roof vents printable this time. Going to make an attempt at printing windows for it also.

More Conrail freight car projects that I have finally sealed the decals on.  Two X65’s (266737 & 266783) three X58A’s (208375, 208316 & 208408) and one X58B (265969).  These are the Flagships of my boxcar fleet.  A lot of time was put into them, and I am very pleased with the results.  I have two more X65’s, one more X58A and three more X58B’s that the decals are still not completely snuggled down yet.  I hope to get them dull coated soon.  Thanks.

Having more SW1 fun this week.
This will be Milwaukee #951 as part of the Austin, MN patrol.
I needed the stepped hood version instead of the tapered hood of the CNW that I had on hand. Versions of these models that have all the right details to paint up for Milwaukee are hard to come by so I grafted on part of a Kato NW2 which also provided the correct arch top windshield.

Mr Bussey answered this already, but here is some additional information.  They started out as factory painted X58 cars that I stripped and repainted with a Scalecoat II mixture of boxcar red and oxide red.  Green car is SCII PC green.  Depending on the car, the decals are from multiple Microscale, Highball Graphics, Walthers, and custom decals I had made for another project.  These were a labor of love from what is my all time favorite freight car, prototype and model.  Thank you.

Eden Park Baggage.

One of the brass manufacturers sold a shrouded Pacific and four(?) car Cincinnatian set.  I forget if it had Eden Park or not.  That train did have the only smoothside RPO that B&O had (although it was a re-built HW baggage/mail).

Other than that, a smoothside baggage/passenger is lacking in N scale, although this one was a baggage/lounge.

Good idea for a car................or are you doing the whole Cincinnatian?


Lee, good idea for the boxes on the Circus Scheme.  My era requires Fireball on all except FAs and the F-3s that came back as F-7s, so I do not use that scheme, but, it is still a good idea.

I just realized that Key got the roof wrong. I looks like they mirrored the vents, left to right. Those vents are on the wrong side of the car. The vestibule door side of the car should have 5 vents, not 3.
