I've been working through a backlog of car kits.  This is a Silverton, Gladstone & Northerly boxcar painted as-built.  As you'll see, the lettering stencils say that the car should not stray any farther than Durango and by extension would have no reason to be interchanged with the RGS, but...Rule #1.  Anyway, this is a good old-fashioned LaBelle kit, but because of some minor inconsistencies with the thickness of the scribed siding and some rough scribing, I decided to replace the the wood sides, ends, doors, and roof with styrene.



Here's the plan from Robert Sloan's The Rainbow Route along with an in-progress floor shot.  I did my best to replicate the split airbrake system pipe for pipe.  Dimensionally, the car is correct...and while the decals are off (they specify a length of 30 feet), these cars were behemoths by Colorado narrow gauge standards at a full 32 feet in length, so my model is 32 HO scale feet long.

Also from Sloan's book is this shot of one of the cars in the waning years of the Silverton Northern RR (to whom the 10 SG&N boxes were transferred when the former took over the latter).  Note that by the 30s, the upper door track awnings had been removed.  The lettering had all but disappeared as well, including both the original S.G. & N. lettering and the subsequent S. N. R. R. lettering .

I also "busted out" a traditional Labelle kit, wood scribed sides and all.  It's an F&CC boxcar painted and detailed not so much as-built, but as modified in later years like the one at the Colorado Railroad Museum.  I included the upper door track awning though (it just makes the build that much easier, LOL).  Note the presence of car end truss rods.

Well I found time for a bit of tidy up modelling after 6 weeks of dealing with an unpleasant (legal) issue which is now, thankfully, in the rear view mirror!

This week's tidy up was finally installing lights and otherwise completing an interesting covered loading ramp "laser-scratched" to represent one that stood at Cascade BC.

And here's the mirror image  model shoe-horned between trackage at the C&W's rendition of Cascade.  I left the walls off to better see road power snake around to serve the potato warehouse spur.

that detailing on the underneath braking system is exquisite.

Additional progress on the New Haven NE caboose C-118 for the wreck train.  End railings, grabs and brakewheel shafts installed on the floor, and the upper hand grabs on the ends.  The 3D-printed roof-vent was in the wrong location, so I cut that one off and turned a new one from brass rod.  Waiting for additional components to arrive before continuing - brass Peacock brakewheels, linked chain ... and laser-cut wood roofwalk end platforms (since I forgot to include them on the digital model) that hopefully match the existing roofwalk, so that I don't have to mill matching ones out of styrene.

I spend some time this week turning Trix... I painted another old F unit...


Being part of the Retro Fleet, I figured I didn't have to do the paint job any better than I did when I was 13,  I'd say  Mission Accomplished!

I did try a new trick, though...  I made a mask for the always challenging white lettering box by photocopying the decal onto label stock, then carefully trimming it out to use as the mask.


I was concerned that the label stock would soak up the paint and transfer it to the body, but it worked out really nicely!  It actually bled less than the masking tape I used did.



Of course, now I have to scare up another A and B unit to have a proper set...

Is that ramp wide enough to drag a loco out when it misses the turntable?  That was a surprisingly common event in steam days, and both diesels and cabooses have done it as well.
