Laying out buildings on my reworked track plan.




Trying to get a specific visual effect with the track plan while sticking to the KISS method.

I came across this blog post about Rock Islands homebuilt covered hoppers and decided it would be a neat N scale project

It is a stock Micro trains Rock Island hopper car. The roof was built using a Murphy roof and roofwalk from a Atlas 1932 boxcar, hopper hatches from a Kato 70 ton hopper and styrene bits and pieces.

So I started a small building materials unloading facility so I would have somewhere to unload it.

Which was inspired in part, by this photo of a small Redi Mix plant

Excellent photo Michael!  Nice touch having the abandoned track in the tall grass and weeds, and the backdrop is very effective as is the lighting.

Finished another NP Depot for my collection of Z Scale NP Depots, this time Harrison MT. It's a class 3 depot that was built in the 1880's and sold to Virginia City MT in 1964, where it stands today as a fan train depot/gift shop. I used an 0402 white warm LED imbedded in a bamboo toothpick to illuminate the train order semaphore. I used Tamiya clear read, yellow, and green paint applied to the specticals with a needle, and when the paint dried it left thin colored lenses.

Another project.

Milltown dam outside Missoula.  The prototype has since been removed.  Without getting into too much detail, I started with a Tomytec engine house and cut out new walls with the Silhouette cutter.  I used some Tichy windows and doors that were close enough.  The dam itself was a casting offered years ago that I am cutting apart and reorganizing.

The bridge was made by a friend.  He started with HO trusses.  I don't recall from where.

I picked up a Walthers 10-6 sleeper off Ebay last week (same tooling that Lowell Smith is using for his cars) to repaint into the Texas Special livery. Finished it up this morning. It turned out well and it matches Lowell's cars quite nicely. Up to 12 cars now in the train. It looks pretty nice running around the layout. Lowell would be jealous

Thanks, It was a fun little project. I love oddball cars like this and the MT Rock Island hoppers are plentiful and cheap on the Bay.
