I picked up this older Kato U boat a while back.  Figured it was time to update it.  TCS CN-GP decoder and modern wheel sets with low flanges

Are those lead weights in the hoppers?

Those are some snazzy looking hoppers!

Do you have a trackplan for your layout?

Davenport 45 Tonner v2.0

I reworked my switcher from last week that was WAY out of proportion. I extended the cab and built a new hood with better grille and headlight detail. Pilot to pilot this measures just over 2 1/8”.
There’s a new mech in the works bashed out of two Kato 11-107 powered chassis
Edit: I see I need to fill in the top of the front window on the right side.

MK: , Yes, those are weights, but I don't know if all of them are lead.  The spherical ones come with the cars, the odd looking ones don't.  As far as I know the ones in my cars are steel.  At least, the one car I tested was magnetic, and I know I haven't added any steel weights to any of them.

Using lead for weights (in models, and even as wheel balancing weights in vehicles) has fallen out of favor in recent years due to environmental and health concerns.  Many of those weights are now made from steel.

Being a fisherman in my other hobby I have a large supply of old lead weights to use on cars, but modern ecological concerns about lead poisoning of waterfowl eating lost sinkers has led most manufacturers to switch to steel, probably cheap imported stuff, or tungsten to appeal to the guys who want a smaller profile weight.

It's well documented how nasty lead can be.

Pete , really , in model trains ? I would think outdoor shooting ranges , the 5 burro's  ;) , shotgun shells that are not steel shot , and SG slugs . These are ground water affecting  much more than a cut of hoppers . Those hoppers will someday be recycled as plastic broken toys , at which time all the metal should be culled and dealt with properly . Or am I wrong way thinking again ?

I picked up a Walthers 10-6 sleeper off Ebay last week (same tooling that Lowell Smith is using for his cars) to repaint into the Texas Special livery. Finished it up this morning. It turned out well and it matches Lowell's cars quite nicely. Up to 12 cars now in the train. It looks pretty nice running around the layout. Lowell would be jealous  ;)

Which red did you use?  I have a total of 1 Texas Special car to do.  For a brief time, the Wabash carried one of the 14-4 sleepers through to Chicago- and I picked up a Des Plaines kit for one of those cars.  But I am no expert on MKT or Frisco, so not sure which red to use.

I have a mind like a steel trap...a VERY rusty, old steel trap.

The requirements for a “This product contains lead” are probably enough to put company lawyers off the idea.

Cool. I don't have to answer my own questions.  :D
