JTC vs. Rolland: Fight!
« on: December 04, 2019, 07:31:04 PM »

I received my two batches of Rolland containers today along with JTC cans for comparison.

Hot take: Both are good.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
OOCL = JTC, Maersk = Rolland
The 40' containers are very similar. Corrugations see similar size and shape (sine wave pattern instead of box corrugations.)

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Here we see our first tooling differences. The JTC can has larger IBC holes for stacking.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Front ends are a bit different. The Rolland can has a lip along the chassis cutout. JTC has pegs while the Rolland did not. The corrugations on the Rolland are just a hint boxer.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The doors are a bit different with hasp and horizontal rib placement a bit different.

Interiors show different tooling.

The Rolland floor is just a flat plastic sheet with location marks for the included magnets.

Rolland container surfaces seem crisper (maybe their paint layer is thinner)  That is especially apparent around the door hardware.

And we finally see that these are different models (from different molds).

Spoke too soon Pete!

Round 2:

OOCL = JTC, MSC = retooled Rolland

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The retooled Rolland can matches the JTC except for smaller stacking pegs. This is only one of two indications they are different tooling. More on that below.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Front ends look the same. (No lip on the Rolland)

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
As do the rear. The doors and can floor now match the JTC contours exactly.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
If you look at the front end of the JTC can, you will notice the cut-outs have a distinct step to them while the Rolland does not. I have a theory on this.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]
Rolland uses magnets on both the top and bottom. JTC does not. But look at the JTC can and you will find location marks for -magnets-

Also note the Rolland can has floor supports located in the exact same spot as JTC.

Theory: Rolland introduces container to market, impressing JTC. Rolland offers an updated platform to JTC. JTC makes minor tweaks to the tooling (specifically the bottom die on the body and the bottom die of the floor. Everything else is the same as the Rolland ODM. JTC also requests metal plates be used in place of magnets due to the tendency of the cans to stack slightly off center with the dual magnet system.

The original Rolland can and the JTC have the same polarity while the new Rolland cans have opposite polarity.

All models use the same small round magnets. I plan on replacing the roof magnets with steel plates and reversing the polarity of the new Rolland cans to match industry standards. The extra magnets will go into Walthers and  Deluxe containers.

Spoke too soon Pete!

Looking at the 2nd comparison, my original statement still applies.  Right?

The msc container also has crisper door hardware (or thinner paint) than OOCL.

Thanks for photos Daniel.  What is the floor like on the retooled Rolland?

I's literally sheet styrene with magnet locators in it. There is no detail.

Is Rolland actually producing stuff again? Are they being sold outside of eBay?

Yes, they are producing new containers and paint schemes. They are available direct from the manufacturer on eBay or Aliexpress. I would just use eBay. The prices are similar and the loss protection is better. Plus eBay uses air mail while Ali literally sends the slow boat from China.

My order on ebay took 9 days and was easy to track...

The 40 foot reefer looks like the one Atlas announced.

Anyone know? Are the 20' reefers high cube?

Don't recall seeing many of these on NS trains...???...

They're doing themselves a total disservice by advertising their containers as 1:150 scale. I'm sure most North American N scalers saw this and passed them up. And imagine if you actually modeled in 1:150 scale and found these to be too small!

Maybe someone should contact them to let them know that are limiting their marked by using incorrect scale in their specs.
