Nice photos!  Interesting how the pilot truck's rear wheel and front drivers received rusty weathering, probably from the cylinder blow-down steam and water spray.  Good study of the progression of weathering on a brand new loco.

Or, rather, freshly washed. This pic is of 844. I would conjecture the accumulation of schmutz is exaggerated due to it not being the lead dog.

You are right (I should have said "clean"),  But if it was due to it being not in the lead, how do you explain a perfectly clean front pilot truck driver (that should have been exposed to the brunt of the kicked up dirt)?

It's lubricating oil residue. 4014 had it also but it was mor pronounced on those 80" drivers of 844.

I'll suggest it is due to aerodynamics. Because it is trailing, the airflow and turbulence that normally dissipates the downward-pointing blow-off from its own cylinders is considerably reduced. So it's steam-cleaning the ballast as it goes, with the spray residue coming back on itself. That especially explains the second axle of the pilot truck, right below and aft of the cylinder c0cks.

We've followed the 844 on a number of its junkets, and have never seen it like that. Here it is approaching Maryville, KS, having traveled the same distance as Cheyenne to Ogden:

I'll also note that in the videos I've seen, they seem to exaggerate cylinder c0ck operation, keeping them open much longer than really necessary (IMO). (Ed has impressed me as a better-safe-than-sorry type of guy. Our buddy Steve, not so much.) Anyway, more opportunity to kick-up ballast detritus.

I was talking about the rusty-colored weathering.  Like Mike said, it is most likely caused by the steam/water spray coming from the cylinder drain cocks.

I'm not arguing where it's coming from. The steam/ spray does have lubricating oil in it and when oil and water gets 'mixed' together it turns that color. When 4014 was sitting in the yard, the steam cocks were dripping an oily colored liquid.
If you look at the videos I just posted you can see the same coloration on the front two drivers of the front engine of 4014.
I will say though it doesn't look like it's all oil just a lot of oil with whatever the steam kicks up sticking to the oil.

Sounds like you are making an argument against your own statement.  I never said it was oil (I said steam). You were the one who stated "It's lubricating oil residue.".

Whatever. . . It is a rusty-color residue.

Semantics and English  It's oil (shiny grayish brown) and residue (dull brownish gray) 

And you only have 16 left to post. YOU CAN DO IT!
