More of the Walthers tooling. I was hoping they would do some private owner schemes on the 4427's but I'll be in for a couple.

I sure wish they would do HH GP30's and 35's.

I must have missed something, when did Atlas get a 50' airslide?

I'm curious if the 4427s at $32.95 MSRP will have the same plastic roof walks and truck mounted couplers as the Walthers releases .. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I remember buying several at $4.00 each years ago.

Wow strange karma happening Mark.
As I picked up that very model from storage last nite to identify it...
No idea how or why I came to own it, but was measuring a variety of covered hoppers (LO) for the ex-PMI body mount suitability.
Two notes-
1- Your pic at http://www.spookshow.net/freight/walthersps2.html isn't the same model- ie. the actual model has no valve/ gate parts.      I'm acutely aware of the lack of detail or how barren it looks as a model, as such a visible underbody which wouldnt normally concern me.
2- I suspect the CB&Q paint scheme is too early for the 'trough' loading prototype model (the low sided and longer PS-2 appearing on the Rio Grande in 1964).

Atlas had a preproduction sample of the Airslide at the Oaks WGH Show.

No. that paint scheme is correct for the CB&Q cars.  Whether they were 4427s is another question.

From Railroad Picture Archives:
"Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-4 85632 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in April 1982, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: In the early 1960's, Pullman-Standard developed the PS-2CD design, which eliminated the split discharge gates by running the center sill through the inside of the hoppers, thus allowing a single, center-discharge outlet for each hopper, for a total of three outlets per car instead of the previously standard six. Cubic capacity was increased to 4,000 cubic feet by raising the sides another 18 inches and extending the slope sheets all the way to the end of the car frame. Roller bearing trucks of 100-ton capacity were also employed. The Q bought 190 PS-2CD's in 1963, numbering them 85500 - 85689. The first 140 were class LO-4 ( the HC class designation having been abandoned after 1961 ) and featured the traditional 10 circular loading hatches. The last 50 cars were the first Burlington covered hoppers with trough loading hatches and thus were classed LO-4A. All 190 cars still employed the 4/3/4 outside post pattern and had Enterprise gravity outlets."

So the model pictured should have trough hatches.

Pleased to see the 4427 returning, surprised it is marketed under the “Master” line, the Walthers car was definitely more in the “Trainman” detail level.

Yeah that's what struck me as well. Although the end cages are fairly well rendered, the walkway was plastic. It's not bad looking, just basic. There is virtually no brake detail and I don't even think they had chute gates. I seriously hope they upgraded the tooling on this or I feel this run may be an utter failure at this price.

Also, anyone know where the  48' GSI cat came from? Walter's made a 53' bulkhead, the same prototype as Athearn. They also had a 50' pulpwood bulkhead, but that's clearly not the car shown.

Thanks for the correction. I'm not sure why I picked that picture (I guess they were harder to find back in the day). Anyway, it's been replaced.

They did buy 100 General American 4500's in Class LO-5 n so maybe the WKW car was a stand in but it is possible the Q did have 4427 lo sides. That car started to be manufactured in 1964. The 4000's were a year or two earlier. As I recall the story told me, PS marketed the 4000' and 4427' as corn cars and the 4740 was originally marketed as a wheat loader. It didn't take long for that to fall by the wayside. The 4740 was an LO-10 and the ACF 4600's were LO-8 so maybe somewhere in the LO's there may have been room for a 4427 low hip.

Is this the same prototype as the Micro Trains 50’ Airslide? If not, what are the differences?
