Is this the same prototype as the Micro Trains 50’ Airslide? If not, what are the differences?

From Paul (PGBowler2):

The 4180 was a project that BLMA had lined up to go with the crude oil tankers, we followed it through.  The Atlas model will have three variations, the high brake wheel, and the low brake wheel with two different ends, so there are schemes that we can do that Micro-Trains cannot.

I remember buying several at $4.00 each years ago.

I was talking with Shane from @scaletrains about this last weekend. I think it's one of the big challenges for manufacturers who are trying to do new stuff is that exact thing. It's one thing when depreciation happens in the secondary market but when your dealers end up routinely doing stuff like that, what can you do? It's no surprise that Kato has tried the stupidity that is MAP.

Most of the LHS community will not cut new inventory THAT much as they will usually try to at least break even. Also, it also does not build trust in the LHS community when the manufacturer cuts their price direct to the consumer and leave the shop holding inventory they can't sell at that price.

I remember about 3-4 years ago, there was this guy at a couple of shows down here that had a bunch of cars he was selling dirt cheap. He had colored dots that designated a price from $4-10. I bought a couple of 4427s and an old coil car from the old Walthers line and a couple of MTL's. The WKW was all $4 and everyone was used and the coil cars trucks literally fell out of the car when I pulled it out. He was biuying stuff at garage sales, auctions and shops that went out of business. haven't seen him since the end of 2015.

More of the Walthers tooling. I was hoping they would do some private owner schemes on the 4427's but I'll be in for a couple.

I sure wish they would do HH GP30's and 35's.

No provision for frame-mounted couplers on the 4427

I'm curious if the 4427s at $32.95 MSRP will have the same plastic roof walks and truck mounted couplers as the Walthers releases .. (Attachment Link)

Looks like toy choo choo trucks...

Corrected that for Mark. MTL has never been one for self-control when it comes to using the wrong paint scheme on a body style.

I wonder if the "48 foot" GSC cars are the inside length?  The 53 ft bulkhead flats have an inside length of 48'6", a "standard" length for bulkhead flats, especially for lumber hauling.

That's what the Atlas text states, 48' inside length.

Well that's just confusing. They are 53' cars after all. Just with bulkheads.

Most bulkhead flats are classed by the inside length, as that's what the shipper is interested in.  The overall length can vary, depending on bulkhead and draft gear design, but the only people interested in that are crews wondering if their train will fit the siding, and modelers.

That's actually the case with most freight cars.  If one looks at the stenciled dimensions, the outside length is rarely found on North American equipment.  For a regular flatcar the "inside length" can be the same as the body length, especially if it has a drop- or side-mounted brakewheel.

Europeans, on the other hand, almost always include the outside length as well, as "Length over Buffers".  The US equivalent would be "length over pulling faces".
