I'd just be guessing.
The listing above says 40/72. And 40/64

If I were going to guess, I would think the smaller number is the ultra fine flanges.

So I'm guessing the 72 is the one you want.

It is for the width of the wheel tread, not for the flanges.

From their catalog:
Arnold/Walthers S2 Diesel upgrade geared wheelsets Part # Price
40"/72 1.0mm x .445" axle geared wheelsets (4/pkg) 2679-6 $30.95
40"/64 1.0mm x .445" axle geared wheelsets (4/pkg) 2680-6 $30.95

N/72 Sstandard or typical wheel tread width for N gauge, but with a more realistic
appearance flange.
N/64 Semi-finescale tread that operates reliably on most ā€˜Nā€™ gauge trackage

Wolf

You might want to look in their catalog (they explain those numbers). As I recall the size difference is not the depth of the flanges but the width of the thread.  IIRC, the 64 is the narrower (closer to scale) thread width. Flange depth is the same for both.
. . . 42 . . .

The narrow tread can cause problems if you have turnouts with wide flangeways.  The /72 wheels will run on almost any track, while the /64 can drop into wide flangeways at frogs.  If you've run FVM's narrow-tread wheels without problems, the /64 wheels should work as well.  If you want to be safe, go with the /72.

Yes, I think I'll go with the wider tread wheels.  Once the XMAS postal insanity is over I'll order the NWSL wheelsets.  It will be nice to get these old locos running well again.

I used the 72 on mine when I fixed up my wheelsets years ago.

I used 64 width treads in my S4. Can confirm that will NOT work on Peco switches, though they work on Atlas C55 just fine. I also installed a Starman motor replacement. This is now the best operating engine I have by far.

Daniel,

Would you please elaborate on the Starman motor install and where you got it?

It consisted of a Faulhaber motor with a machined brass cradle that adapted it to the cavity in the Arnold engine.
If you do a web search for  "starmans s2 motor upgrade"  you will find many articles with photos showing the parts and their installation.

The second part of your question, however ("where to get it"), can only be answered by Marc and Hans Starmans.  They sometimes post in here, and you could start with the contact info on their website:
http://n-stars.com/

and ask them if they can still make you an upgrade kit.

Unfortunately that are no longer making the upgrade. In fact,I purchased the VERY last kit they made.

The upgrade was not cheap - 130 if I remember correctly.

Don't forget the Mashima 10x12x15 motor will fit. Think Atlas used it in their MP15.
