While I suspect I already know the answer, is this a real railroad name?

No, it is made up... but funny nonetheless! I cant remember right now what it stood for, so I have asked the person who painted it what the railroad is.
Because why not...

Those old CC/Herpa trucks really aren't that bad, are they?  With a little work they look respectable, and if one can find them on sale, are cheap enough to buy in bulk.

Yes, with a little TLC, they're great. I think these are the same ones sold by Deluxe Innovations as well, but they painted the rims, did a better job with paint. They where much nicer looking trucks as a result.

While detail-painting the wheels is a big improvement in their appearance (especially from couple of feet away), replacing the wheels with the gorgeous Trainworx wheels makes really big difference, even when examined very closely.  But even the original Con-Cor moving trailers go for some serious money on eBay nowadays.  Probably because nobody else makes a similar model.

You're correct that there a black hole for N scale tank cars from the 50's and 60's.  I this project goes well, I will certainly look at doing welded 8,000-10,000 gallon tank with full platforms.

There was discussion on Yahoo's MFCL about the ACF 20,000-gallon car with center sill, I think that would be a good one for an enterprising manufacturer to knock out:

Been working at a snails pace on the river bank and front edge of the layout this weekend.  Couldn't tell you how many times I've redone this same area.    Still more to add so I hope to get this section done this week.

As always, thanks for looking!

David

I keep coming back to these photos and thinking how phenomenal these scenes are. Whatever you're trying to achieve, from where I sit, you're there. These are beautiful, publication-worthy scenes. Absolutely beautiful work, David.

Agreed, simply phenomenal @davidgray1974.  One thing I really like about these photos is the absence of trains -- it adds a great sense of anticipation.

I want to say it's the "Suffern Hoboken Interstate Transfer", and is a project by some friends of mine.

That is awesome (or epic for you Millennials)!   :D
The logotype is very clever and innocent looking.

Almost as bad is the "Regional Bus and Rail Company of Canton Ticino", in the Italian border region of Switzerland.  The official name is "Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi SA", reporting marks FART.  And, at least into the 1980s, those were prominently displayed on the sides of the electric railcars.  Sometime since then they changed to a nice white and blue paint scheme, probably because English-speaking tourists found the name too amusing.

This weekend, I'm working on laying out my HO model of the town of Aberdeen, North Carolina.  I'm trying to replicate this scene:

DFF

For that center building, have you considered getting four identical store kits and butting the front walls all together in a row? Cut off the decorative cornices and replace it with a one-piece brick section matching the picture. Then putty the seams.  I assume you're going to alter the store fronts to match the picture.
