Would love to get one of these trains as they started in the year I model.

Unfortunately I'm pretty sure they did not run in the area I model.  :(

Good to know, I picked up a custom made 5 car set of the early series off of the bay years ago and want to blend them in with new release. I know they'll stick out like a sore thumb compared to the new ones.

So the next series will include "primed for grime" sets that give the tattered and torn look...
Anyone know the history of the "patch" on the flanks of these cars?  I dont remember a small font Tank Train on the cars rolling through town here over all the years... supposed to be modeled after specific prototypes so there appears to be a story there.
The pre production models looked real nice at the shows and will be a nice addition for SP modelers... just too bad they are using the mchenry couplers...

Thats a good write-up. Thanks for posting the link.
I always thought they took them over Cajon to save from keeping helpers entrained over Vincent Hill and the grade up out of Newhall to Slymar... back then it was a recent change from TT-TO to DTC on the Saugus line.
We used to pace them up San Fernando road in the late evenings, and bag shots of the easbounds billowing smoke out tunnel 5 on Tehach...
Good times!  ...those were the days.
