While staging that last photograph, I did catch the light just right to show the blemish I mentioned earlier, on the cab to left of the herald:

Looks like the louvre closest to the cab on the fireman's side is nearly completely filled with paint.

Hmmm, given the poor finishes, one may be better off buying this loco in a hobby shop, if at all.
Anyone here have the ATSF zebra yet? I was thinking of getting one as a backup switcher, but now I'm on the fence.

I am really hoping Atlas does the S2 in the zebra stripe scheme soon.  I was on the fence about picking up sw1200 but I am not as interested in it now.

I just got one last week from BLW. DRGW, and paint looks great. It even has very fine words on pilot and side of hood. I didn't realize they went with brass worms a few years ago, and even have a much brighter, whiter LED. BUT, they still have those flimsy shell mounted contacts. MTL, which uses this mech for their SW1500, used much beefier contacts, made from brass I guess. Even a larger attachment spot under sill for contacts. If only WKW would follow that. If they produce anymore.
 I wish I could find the email, and printout  from Ebit for his improved pick up idea:(  One thing, were the shells always such a PITA to get off?

Yes, me too, we can only hope. Even the earlier, partial zebra would be good (although that one is easier to do and I have a couple of S2 undecs waiting to be painted).

This is with the shell firmly seated on the locomotive. Top of sill at the rear 12/32", top of sill front, approximately 14/32". A 1/16" difference or 10" in N scale.

Wow, will the couplers mate up with a Micro-Trains height gauge?  That sounds like a big difference.  Maybe it wasn't assembled correctly at the factory.

I'd be just as concerned about the paint applied with a spatula on the rest of the model...

The paint sure isn't of Kato quality.    I wonder if the undercoated models (if they even offer them) have a thick coating of primer applied to the plastic (like the Life Like models had)?

Perhaps Walthers should have subcontracted the painting and lettering to Micro-Trains.
