Walthers Limited Edition SW 1200 Coming in December

Perhaps Walthers should have subcontracted the painting and lettering to Micro-Trains.

Maybe we could all pitch in, buy the tooling from Walthers for the drives and the shells, and give the whole lot to MT for their 50th birthday, which must be coming up pretty soon.  Isn't the same drive used for the SW1500- or is that just an urban legend?

FWIW-with a little work, these shells will fit on a Bachmann NW2 chassis, which has a much better electrical pickup system, and runs really well too...Not the cheap option, but a workable one.

That paint though....

Hmmm. Is the old Life-Like SW8/SW9 shell compatible with the SW1200 chassis? Not sure if they use same shell.

I guess a swap might not be worth it if the 10" gap is there though. That looks horrible!

They used to market it as an SW9/SW1200 (both are written on the boxes on mine)- I am sure there are some minor differences in the prototypes but they were very similar- at least the early production SW1200s. The shells look very similar if not identical between the one in the photos here and my 20(?) year old LL.  Except the 20 year old LL the shell is level and you can make out the louvers.  The SW8 had only one stack - I don't have one, so don't know if that was dual marketed as an SW900.

Too bad Walthers does not stock parts so we could retrofit the old LL with new wheels and those brass gears.  If the new ones go on super sale, maybe I will pick up a couple for the new chassis for the sake of easier DCC conversion.

One of the vast selection of Kato worms is a direct replacement for the Life Like plastic one.  Don't rememebr which . . .

This just popped on my YouTube radar. I was hoping that Walthers would make some updates to it, but I'll just wait until the fire sale a year from now.

Well, it is a useful video, if too long. But who installs DCC decoders without first testing a loco on DC? Just my take..

I never thought I’d see the green EJE scheme in N scale so I was absolutely thrilled when these were announced. As someone who models Chicago/NW Indiana, this was a cool release. I got mine the other day. The paint is a tad thicker and the green might be a shade too light; however, with slight weathering I believe it won’t be any more noticeable than other units. Being that I can’t even find decals to paint them myself, I’d rather have these slight imperfections that I can fix as opposed to the other option. I have IHB’s on the way so we’ll see.

I’m not exactly sure as my main modeling interest is the IHB, but I’ve seen photos of the green switchers from 1991-2004, so they fit in my mid-1990’s era.

Don't worry .... these locos will bomb out, have to be sold at firesale prices, but will have confirmed  Walther's ongoing philosophy: N scale products never sell.

Well, when you release a model that has some pretty serious quality control problems do you blame the consumer for not buying a sub par product?
