Speculation thread. What is the next diesel and steam loco we are likely to see?

Didn't the UP Big Boy win that poll? I know that engine candidates on Kato's polls aren't guaranteed to be made, but given that Kato's been fixated on prototypes from western railroads as of lately, I'd assume that they'd be more motivated on making a Big Boy instead of another prototype.

I think it was a tie between those.  I hope that sanity prevails and since we already have couple of plastic and couple of brass Big Boys In N scale, Kato will produce that beautiful, streamlined, light-gray Dryefuss Hudson and a rake of matching 20th Century Ltd. cars. Kato does like to release complete passenger sets and this one would really be nice.

   MoPac seems to be mostly neglected in recent N scale offerings. A MoPac Eagle short passenger train should sell just for looks alone.  A simple Jenks blue F unit offering by Kato would also be nice.

Nyuk nyuk. Still working on it; was supposed to have it done a month ago, but I totally screwed the paint. New shell arrives this week. You'll see it on here soon enough.

Amen to that! I don't think that any of the Strasburg engines had been made even in HO scale, save for foobies and maybe brass models. I wouldn't know since I don't model in HO.

But that's it.  2-10-0 #90 has become so iconic I feel like it should be done, but what do I know.

In the end, recent experience suggests the next new locomotive will be one already offered by at least one other manufacturer...preferably three.

With all the successes in narrow hood diesels recently the narrow firebox of #90 is no longer an excuse . Couple ( railroad term IIRC  ) that to the trend for scale speed would aid power via gearing from the smaller motor . I would expect it would sell like hot cakes and I would get one or two is a heart beat .

I'm with you brother. Multiple "upgrades", and it's still looks like crap. Wouldn't it have been better to just bite the bullet and do a full redo? I'm still hopin' now that a running prototype is on the horizon....

Well even if there was a tie in that Kato poll I would be hard pressed to see another manufacturer do a big boy. (Insert all comments along the "but they do love to pile on" here) I don't have one and no matter who made it would not get one. Just not my cup of tea. For Kato The Hudson would be a great model as they could do it both streamlined and not streamlined. That would be a pretty good move for them IMHO. NYC had hundreds of the things. If you modeled NYC from 1927 until the end of steam in 1956 or so, you need three or four at least. They did everything.

Bachmann could do a nice heavy pacific with their K4 mechanism. Make it an ATSF 3400 and they could put New Haven on it as a respectable I4.  Boston and Maine 3700 class locos are very close. The Rutland had 6 class K pacifics which in pictures look very close. Southern Railway PS4 is about the same size. And I am sure I could go on. It just screams low hanging fruit. This locomotive, depending on the appliances mounted, ran from the late teens all the way through the end of the steam.

Northern? Let BLI do that one.

USRA heavy Pacific-Many roads had copies, even though only Erie had originals.  There is a demand for a decent running, properly detailed Pacific.  The B-mann K-4 is too road specific.

USRA 0-6-0-B-mann upgrades it to all wheels live tender and DCC onboard.  The things are selling well as they are, with a tender with out-of-date construction methods.  If you swap out the stock tender for the B-mann SPECTRUM, you have a great locomotive.

Russian decapod-Now that B-mann has a motor small enough, it can actually issue this.

N&W 4-8-0-This was the last N&W road freight power smaller than an articulated.  There is one at Strasburg.  N&W has many fans out there.

An Anthracite road (Reading, Lackawanna, Jersey Central, Delaware and Hudson) 2-8-0, 2-8-2 or 4-6-2.-B-mann did a very poorly running Reading 2-8-0.  In addition, it hung trailing trucks on it and hung some other road names on it. B-mann might want to revive the shell and in addition to Reading, it could hang CNJ, DL&W and D&H lettering on it.  If the shell will fit the K-4 chassis, it could even do an anthracite pacific.

Baldwin road switcher-Never been done in N.  Several roads ran them.

Lima yard goat-Never been done in N.  While only one "first tier" road ran them (NYCS), a couple of "second tier" roads did (B&O, NYNH&H).  Erie and Wabash had them, as well.

FM yard goat-the only one is the TRIX, which is hopelessly archaic.  Time for an update.

That would hurt my wallet very much... Riding behind them potentially twice a week is enough to make me want them. If anyone wver did Arrow III's, I would go bankrupt.

How about a Texas Special with the Fluted sides E7's and correct passenger cars, that is one I would like. gene maddox

I second the Texas Special and will add any of the Mopac Eagles and especially the GM 'Train of Tomorrow'. Diesel loco choices are the CF7 and the BL2 (an upgraded model).

That is one that I really can't afford because it doesn't fit my layout, but would be tempting none the less- like the Texas Rocket.  In one box or another, I have a couple of the Des Plaines kits for Texas Special cars.  I think Des Plaines/M&R also made fluting to fit the E7, once upon a time.

I'll go out on a limb and say NS SD60Es because of the fancy paint schemes on a couple of them: NS 6920, 911, & 6963.
