1066 99% finished. I lost a number board somewhere along the way so I'll have to make another, or see if FVM has any I can get.

I image like the original ones: either  use translucent white material or clear material with a coat of white paint (which will be translucent). Then apply the number decal and a clear coat.  Regular white polystyrene (like the Evergreen sheets) is translucent  when thin enough (like 0.005 or 0.010).  Perfect light diffuser for being back-lit.  I have made light boards using both techinques.

Spent yesterday shoveling coal, LOTS of coal for the test fire of the 765. The engine crew is looking forward to the trips next month out of Chicago, where we will rocket through the burbs'.

Once the rain comes on a weekend, which is a guarantee in Ohio since we see the sun almost three times a year, I'll return to working on the layout.

The new train room has been painted and carpeted. It's approx. 11' x 15'.  Once I establish the Givens and Druthers I'll start a thread in the Engineering forum.

Sure. Nowadays I usually print my own, but in the past I bought Microscale's number boards decal set.  They are printed black over clear so they need a white surface for the proper look.

It's been a while since I bought those.  Also ShellScale Decals (if they are still around) sold number board decals (different from the Microscale set).

Yep, still around.  Can usually find them on eBay.  I just did 5 NS hoppers with his decals

Why would an N Scaler spend hours installing things he cannot see (fireplugs, mailboxes, trash cans, parking meters, a beggar (without a face))?

Because:
.     1) It seemed like a good idea at the time
.     2) The camera sees them.

I am disappointed in the beggar in front of the liquor store. Model Tech Studios must use their HO product in the N Scale ad because this beggar doesn't even have a face, let alone a white beard:

IMO, appearance-wise yes, but mechanically Kato is superior (quieter too).  My friend bought several of the FVM units and they sound like small coffee grinders.  He said they shoudl gett a bit quieter after some running time. . .
