Back from vacation last weekend, so I finally bought some paint today.  For the record, I used Behr’s Marquee-series interior eggshell enamel paint (color #520A-3 Nevada Sky), as suggested by James McNab for the backdrop on his Iowa Interstate’s Hills Line on MRVP.  He used flat paint, but I like eggshell for its low sheen, and it seems easier to clean than flat paint.

And now, once again, I’m channeling Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye, “Blue skies, smiling at me.  Nothing but blue skies do I see.”



I’m sure your curiosity about the poop pipe is piqued, so here is the end result.  I intend to build up some hills and use trees (photos on the backdrop, model trees, or both) to disguise the pipe, the corner, and the minimal space between the track and the backdrop.



Man, I am looking forward to getting the layout back together, as it being disconnected and rolled out into the room just makes navigation through the room a huge pain in the butt.  But first, I would like to do some terraforming behind the trestle where that part of the layout is less accessible and will be up against the wall.

My OCD says take a razor knife and trim that expanding foam at the cap.

I didn’t install that, so I hesitate to touch it.  Plus that extra foam equals additional R-value.

You have no idea how hard this is for me.  What I did was show the MRVP video to my wife, and she also liked the color.  Made it a no-brainer to go to the home center with the paint name and code.  Otherwise, I’d screw this up royally.

Dave, it is very blue.  Maybe fade some white into it from commencing about a 1/3rd down from the top getting whiter toward the horizon. After first settling On the horizon.

Interesting choice on treatment of the poop pipe. You could have coved the corner & kept the sky board in front of the pipe... especially the diagonal section on the left since the track has to pass in front of the pipe. Then split the sky board with a cutout and let the pipe come forward of it where the pipe turns horizontal if you can’t afford to give up the real estate. Then cover the pipe with fluffy cotton for a really cheesy cloud ☁️ effect (if you’re into that). 

Try it with some poster board first and see if it works. I think the diagonal pipe is more distracting than the horizontal section and if you can get that out of the view, it might improve the general effect.

It’s really not that blue in person and does a reasonable job of the hazy sky blue.  You might be surprised at how deep blue the sky can get.  Go outside on a clear day and look straight up.

I decided against fading white into blue to represent haze, because (1) I’m too lazy to try, (2) I’ll procrastinate that until the end of time and would never have painted the backdrop, and (3) there’s enough elevation change along the backdrop that might make it tough to look right at each elevation.

We discussed this back on Page 92.  It was decided that I should keep it simple.  It is just a staging yard, and there’s not enough room to do a cover corner.  I’ll camouflage the lower part of the diagonal sewer pipe, as previously described.  I just work slow.
