Of course it's a guard rail Pete , why I wrote frog is toad-elly weird . So if that car is normal , not staged , and given how spic N span she is would date the picture within a few years of the cars birth year . Who knows what year it is ? I think around 1928 ish maybe .

I think the car might be a 1931 Chevrolet.

I seem to recall that you were going to cast these. Is there a post somewhere? I am curious how you dealt with the bottom sill since it isn't flat.

Richie:  In the top picture, on the guardrail on the far right, the "gauge block" and bolt show nicely as well, which answers my question as to exactly how they were installed.

And obviously these clamps are still used, since that bottom picture shows the other rail held in place with modern clips, rather than spikes.  I don't remember ever seeing track where one rail is spiked and the other clipped.

My foray into HO scale continues. I haven't had much free time lately, but I managed to figure out how to disassemble and strip a Walthers H10-44. The secret to getting the shell off is to remove the couplers and box. Separating the main body into their component pieces was a bit of a challenge since they are glued together. The handrails and the grab irons pop off with a bit of gentle prying. A nicely detailed model. Painting into the classic Milwaukee Orange and Black. Replacing the all-weather cab windows with a newer version. Need to add some longer exhaust stacks.  It was fun working on something that I can see better and on a model with nice detail. I was so frustrated with the N scale Shapeways models.

The C clip things... those are just rail anchors right?  They keep the rail from moving along the ties.

I finished detailing and repainting a pair of Precision Scale brass PRR N8 Cabin Cars. I'm much happier with the stand-off details (some of the grabs where flush against the body) than the factory-applied ones. I also replaced the trucks with Atlas 50-ton Bettendorf trucks and FVM metal wheels.

Mike:  There are two different "C clip things", although I don't see the smaller ones in these pictures..  The small ones, that fit under the base of one rail, are very common, especially on welded rail, and, as you said, are rail anchors.  On some mainlines, there seems to be one on each side of every tie.

The big ones, like the one where the men are working in the header picture, are the guardrail braces, and aren't nearly as common.

I wonder if etched versions of the guardrail braces would find a market?  They'd make properly spaced flangeways almost automatic, but would also cost money, so it's a tossup.
