Audio Ads on TRW???
« on: December 27, 2016, 04:30:31 PM »
About once a day, I'll be listening to my internet radio while reading the news, say, when all of a sudden I hear voices in addition to the radio. I went through each of the tabs I have running simultaneously, and finally narrowed it down to TRW. I scrolled down to the bottom of the TRW page, and there is a truncated ad that doesn't show the little II symbol I could click to SHUT IT OFF! It's really annoying.

Anyone else notice this happening? And what can I do to stop it?

The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Thanks, Tom,

Only a small portion of the ad (if it really is the culprit) shows when I scroll down to it. I couldn't tell who the ad was for the only time I got to it before the talking stopped on its own...

If you use Chrome, each tab that is producing audio will have a little speaker on it.  If it happens again, let me know for sure if it's an ad here.  I'm not sure why you can't scroll all the way to the bottom??

FWIW for Chrome on Mac, I see a bug where some ads or sites with autoplay cause the Chrome Helper thread to pin the CPU at 100% and makes the page very slow & unresponsive.  Been that way for quite a while and so far no fix.

I'm using Safari. I can scroll all the way to the bottom of the page - the problem is the ad is maybe 6-7 inches long but only 3/4" high, cutting off most of the image in the offending ad. I'll try to look real quick if I get the audio again (before it stops on its own) and see if anything has changed.

Thanks for your help so far.

So by default, no ads should be autoplaying.  However, I learned that that isn't the case with ads originating from youtube.  So I blocked them.

Sorry - not sure why Google isn't making this easy!

Because if it was easy nobody would accept auto-playing ads, and very few would click on them, so they wouldn't get any more attention than plain ads.  Google would lose the extra revenue they get from the "fancy" ads.

If advertisers had stuck with plain "click on the stationary image" ads I wouldn't bother with ad blockers on anything.  It's the animated, pop-up, pop-under, auto-resizing, noisy, etc ads that eat up bandwidth and clutter the page that convinced me to get one in the first place, back when all I had was dial-up.  After all, newspapers have had ads for centuries, and I read around them with no problems.

An article I read about sponcered content said that 0.17% of people click on ads. So people try to trick you into clicking.

Yes, and that leads to more ad blocker use, which leads to trickier ads, which leads to...

It's an arms race, and in the end, nobody wins.  The advertisers don't make any more money, the ad services are increasingly distrusted, the readers are no more inclined to pay for increasingly cluttered content, and the pages require ever more bandwidth to load.

I hate the ads as much as the next guy .. but the bottom line is -- we have to pay for this place some how .. Before Tom took over, I made little money on google and amazon ads, but it was enough to defray some of the expenses.  Even then, it still cost me money eachmonth out of pocket, and countless hours of personal time. That was the real cost to me.  Anyone can slap up a forum for $10 per month, and there are many of them out there. But they take time to manage.  RW has been online since 2004.  A lot of people come and go, but there are a few dedicated people that make the place work and if we paid them for their time, $79000 per year might actually be a true measure of the cost involved.

If you don't like the ads here, most of you know how to bypass them. We ask that you don't.  They do help defray the costs.

Happy New Year -- click the ads

Oh I understand why we have them and I trust this place. Click my profile and see my "real" e-mail address. I didn't even give my insurance agent that much info.

They do all this work "tracking" us so they can deliver ads relevant to us and then put up something that we have no interest in at all. Just makes me wonder how they work so hard to get it wrong.

Like the last time someone knocked on my door to lock me in on a natural gas rate. Why are their rates always sooo much more than what I pay   They are just spit balling randomly looking for ignorance.

It looks like Tom is spending $79k a year just sorting through ads.  :tommann:

The newspaper I work at can put all their print ads online, but they can't seem to make any money from it.

And don't forget -- we have to pay a full time staff member to move threads for Peteski ..

Update... since I first mentioned this problem, I haven't heard any more audio ads. Hope it stays that way.

Thanks, everyone involved!

And Happy New Year!
