I didn't see this posted yet, but Kato has painted samples up for these locos.

Hopefully that's not the actual horn and plow for the ATSF unit, but I guess it wouldn't surprise if they were.

They did the same thing with their ATSF GP35 (in HO)...

That Maersk unit is definitely a beautiful unit, makes me tempted but not sure I really need one.

The nose variations that Kato did on the above models gives me hope that Kato will at some point release the more common SDP40F version - the flat nose (Amtrak 540-649).

They also had some color problems with their horns on the recent F7s.

Those ATSF HO GP35 horns and railing though ...  :o :?

No big issue, paint the horn to match and replace the snowplow when you replace the antenna platform and the block of cheese that's supposed to be a Sinclair...  :D

I do want one tho... no real need for it but its too nice to pass up :)

Um, the problem is that the horns are made for similar or same plastic that the handrails are molded from.  Painting it (and expecting the paint to adhere well) is not a trivial task.  But you are rigth - the problem can be remedied by the modeler (who is willing to do it).

True but I have painted them before without too much trouble. They don't have the handling stresses that handrails would...

Mind you for that matter I think BLMA makes a more appropriate horn for these locomotives

As the SDP40F is quite exotic (read: There aren't many prototypical paint jobs to choose from.) it all depends on the sales.

I really would like to know if it was a hit or miss.

I think we knew it already, but I'm glad to see the nose light on the Santa Fe loco, which is appropriate for after the noses were notched.  Believe it or not, the Maersk headlight location is also correct.  (There's still another Santa Fe version to be done with the headlight up high and no notches, BTW.  That would be the early eighties version.)

Oh man those handrails look bigger than usually for some reason. I'm also not so sure about the painted wipers.

Yea, those handrails look like they're made of some 8 inch pipe!..

On the positive, check out that frame detail!

I know the SF unit is in my era, but what about the Maersk unit? When was that painted and how long did it stay in those colors? Trying to justify having one on the Boston line.
