Thanks for posting the photos of the Tomix 9600 chassis with the LifeLike mallet drivers!!  Looks like I need to find myself some non-functioning locomotives for the parts bin since I will eventually need a pair each of consolidations and mikados with 57" drivers.  I am already using a Kato 9600 chassis and drivers for a mikado with 51" drivers.

That last photo really shows how nice those LL drivers are, compared to what I assume is one Tomix driver on the far right.

Look at how small the flanges are and how thin the metal driver tires are!  This was the one big thing that jumped out at me comparing the LL Berk to the Bachmann engine, and it shows up here again.  Before Walthers took Life-Like over and bungled the whole line, Life-Like was making some great engines.  They were on the way up, and now they are gone.  Makes me mad.

I was very excited about the GP38-2s, and now, well, I'm not gonna get into it...

Also, I am VERY interested in this thread. I love the N&W Mollies, probably because of the one of them running an hour or so away from me.

Small update. I've decided to go with an engine similar to 1134 due to the more normal style of cylinders instead of trying to make the oddball ones I've seen on other locomotives. If anyone knows if any of the M class got cylinders similar to the M2, please let me know!
Since this is going to a new home, id like to make sure it runs great and needs little maintenance so simplicity is key here.
The cylinders are from a Bachmann 4-8-2 light mountain. I'll be using all of its running gear.

1134 is a M2 Class and has a larger boiler (see below):

M Class:
1906 375-449 Richmond Loco Works
1906 450-499 Baldwin
These had Stephenson valve gear
40,163 lbs tractive effort
boiler 70" O.D. front to 80" back
Weight 200,000 lbs


M1 Class:
1907 1000-1049 Baldwin
1907 1050-1099 Richmond
Pretty much the same as M except Waschaerts valve gear

M2 Class:
1910 1100-1149 Baldwin
These also had 56" drivers. 24X30 cylinders, weighed 221,780 w/o tender, 200lbs steam pressure. 52,457 lbs tractive effort.
boiler 80" O.D. front to 91" back

M2c
1911-1912 #1150-1160 Roanoke
pretty much the same as M2 but slightly heavier and used Baker valve gear.

Don't forget that the "Ms" and the "M1s" had suicide cabs which were banned from production not long after the "M1s" were built.  The fireman had to stand on a small platform on the front of the tender making for a very dangerous situation...

Very interesting tidbit of information!
And although prototypically dangerous, this is fabulous for the model, because it means that since the backhead sits so far back in the cab, there is more room for the motor without it looking wrong!

Max, since this is the tomix chassis,  the motor might be mounted in the tender with a drive shaft going to the locomotive. I'd like to keep the mechanism close to factory along with the running characteristics.

Sorry for being anal Max, but to me tender-drive loco is a model which has the motor in the tender and it also propels the loco by driving the tender's wheels.  The loco itself is simply a free-rolling dummy getting pushed by the tender.

I call the type of loco described in this thread a tender-motor-mounted loco (for lack of a shorter description).

I guess I own enough Fleischmann locos (which are truly tender-drive locos) for this to bother me.
