Logo Quest

I'm stretching my graphics program abilities trying to get a logo for my freelanced layout. I've sketched a few things up, but getting something I like is proving hard enough I am actually considering changing layout names from Idaho Belt to Oregon Belt.

Three ideas to share, none anywhere near final.

1. The big logo with road initials inside a state outline map. Might have to go for a solid color inside the state on this one. It just looks off to me.Smaller logo with railroad initials inside each other. This is BN inspired, but my problem is that I tend to read the large background letter first so the name comes out as Belt Idaho, not Idaho Belt. I like the look, but the visual processing seems off. Most companies with names that use this type of identifier seem to always do the first word in the name in the large background letter, with the second word's first letter on top, although the most famous, the overlapping NY for New York has equally sized letters.

2. The letters I B but flowing together. Seems to want a black outline.

3. And then there is this one that got me thinking about a location change from Central Idaho to southwestern Oregon. I could easily develop a backstory for how CORP sold off to another entity during the UP merger service shutdowns, and, along with some friendly big brother ICC government help, turned parts of the old Siskyou line into a new railroad to compete with UP carrying cargo from an Oregon port to the interior. I'd run from Coos Bay to Klamath Falls. (The Idaho Belt backstory is a similar situation, just with a different local, but the same scenario.)

So I need to throw some sand down to get more traction, because all I am doing here is spinning wheels.

Latest paint scheme to come out of the shops.

What would it look like if you used the Idaho map as the I within the B?

Ok, important question. When was the railroad formed? Post UP/SP merger in the 90s, right?

Yes, 95-96 time frame as the ICC liquidated some UP equipment to help the IBRR get started and granted trackage rights over the UP main to help connect separate industrial segments IBRR started operating in place of the existing short lines, or in addition to.

Also considering that the IBRR got government money to build a competing route north through Idaho, but bridging Hells Canyon and running along the Salmon River from Boise to Lewiston Idaho seems to stretch plausibility to me. The other option is that IBRR took over the UP's Washy Sub between Spokane and Kingswood JCT on the Canadian Border.

Perhaps like this? The colors need work.

An alternative could be to extend the map to the very top and bottom of the "B", thus making an "I" out of the left side of the B.

...or, even better, align the top and bottom of the map with the inner edge of the protruding/overlap portion of the B (you know what I mean?) which would set off the appearance of an I within the B. I think the lower image in your last post above would work the best as there's already a pretty clear I left of the map already. Just need to shorten the map slightly.

Russ's idea is what I was thinking, kind of like the old E-L symbol. Idaho the same height as the B.

You could also put a literal belt around Idaho for a logo.  :D

I like Peteski's ideas !

Thanks!  The words IDAHO BELT could also be used, in smaller type,   to the right of the logo.
