Ok, I really need to be quicker with these things. I had it mostly done yesterday, but needed to put on the finishing touches.

There are a couple interesting things going on here. The yellow/gray colors have to be pretty saturated to work well together, otherwise it just looks too washed out.

But, then, the problem becomes that the scheme, especially coupled with the name, starts getting uncomfortably close to the well known Utah Belt:
http://www.gatewaynmra.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Utah-Belt-2011-005.jpg
http://rrmods.com/rrmodsshop/product_images/large/rkzweozbzmnqlyu.jpg

So, it's something to think about.

Can't see your picture Ed. I don't want to rip of Eric Brooman, but a family resemblance to help place the layout in freelance territory was an idea, thus the Idaho Belt name rather than something like Idaho Northern & Pacific or Boise and Spokane. My thought was an Idaho Belt was a logical NW extension of the UB, but I don't want my layout to be seen as a rip off of his excellent work.

I'm grateful to all the ideas and suggestions. I like a lot of them. Sirenworks really nailed a logo I like: modern, graphic simplicity, yet communicates a corporate image of strength.  I like Phillip's idea of the interwoven IB over the state outline, with the RR done smaller and off to the lower right inside the state. I might off center the IB so the left edge of the I lines up with the left edge of the map.

I also considered using the B like a post script in this fashion.

The SD40-2 paint scheme would probably get safety stripes on the nose and rear as well, but drawing those was a PIA so I left them off. I'm trying to get a paint scheme that would be easy to apply (2 or 3 colors max) that could be easily applied in real life, as well as in my basement paintshop, so shell pieces and such play a role in color separations.

Peteski's excellent modern design (forgive me for working on it) color coded to the OP Locomotive/General Scheme-Theme

I like this best of Peteski's offerings.

I tweaked it to this.

Stripes.

But...  How wed to gray are you? I think this actually looks pretty good in "potato brown".

Take Pete's offset IB, put it on the nose instead of under the cab, and use this one.

Only thing I am wed to,  Ed, is a color that covers well. I am divorced from 4 wheel power, though.  ;)

So now I need to make an 80mac version, right?

Kidding aside though, talk to me about your theoretical roster... what would the IB have, and where would it have come from (ie, second hand UP C30-7s, former MILW SD40-2s, etc...).

I do like Ed's overall scheme butt he upright letters just look so static.  To me they need to be italics - those to me convey sense of movement (like the railroad is actually doing something rather than just sitting on the track).

Yeah, but you've gotta think of railroad typography. Aside from a few iconic designs (Rio Grande and WM/Reading), italics are hard to come by.

Also, if it's a scheme developed in the 90s, I'm betting that the new ease of desktop publishing would've crept in, hence the boring typography (it's Helvetica, but I probably should've gone with Arial).

It's like the Maryland Midland orange and blue scheme. Otherwise beautiful, but boring type:

Doug, quite creative.

Not sure I want IBRR customers thinking the initials are getting it on. Looks like a 69 with a kinky leg cross thrown in to me. :)

Brown = dirt/rust.  Chose it wisely or your customers may think your Pig Pen.

Or get sued by UPS. They copyrighted their shade of brown.
