Weekend Update 7/26/15

     Pressed something and it posted before I was done. The DD35 was an Erdmann kit I put together in the mid eighties, and I soon made a DDA35 to run with it. Both are pre Kato quality on Minitrix chassis. Later with the release of the Kato GP35 I made Kato quality masters of both of these for U25B chassis with RSD trucks. I had hope that the equal wheelbase RSC trucks would be better but the wheel base is too long, won't fit into the U25B chassis, and so I'll stick with the RSD trucks.   
    The U50C's came along in 89 before a Kato quality U boat was available, so they're Bachman U36B quality shells with a CONCOR cab on slightly stretched Minitrix Chassis. When I was in business all of the shells were available in kits except the Alco's. My Dow/Corning Selastic J mold seized on the second A unit. I soon moved away from Dow and went to Visilox but never made a new mold as I wanted to redo them Kato quality.
     Now that my 100 car/10 loco SP Kaiser ore drag is winding up, I'm starting on improving the big doubles. First up is the Alco which I'm well along with and then the 50C. Notice I haven't mentioned the standard U50. CONCOR had Kato make a good one but it looked fake. If you put in a lot of work as I have they look fantastic with see through radiator sections and cab interior. I posted pictures of that effort here a while back. Funny the CONCOR model is only accurate for the first 3 of the UP units delivered and not for the SP units.
     Well, I got an unexpected day off of work so I'm going to run some more trains,

I've been trying to find something that would stick styrene to other non-styrene surfaces like metal or resin.  CA definitely doesn't work very well.  Is JB Weld something I should be looking at?  How well does it work?  Where can I find it?

I did some 3D designing. Some time ago I decided my summer vacation project would be a diorama type layout that fits on a shelf. In the long run I might connect it to my layout once I have space for that.
The main challenge is that I will 3D print the entire building, mostly in one go. I made walls with metal siding, doors, roof, an interior upper floor for storage or maybe later a break room, down spouts, girders etc.
 
The size of the diorama will be about 1'x1' or maybe 1.5' long. It will be a MOW contractor's yard with a workshop, gantry crane and storage of all sorts of stuff.
The building will only be half a building. It will have one side open so you can view the diorama from the outside or the inside. The building will contain an interior with a warehouse type end and a track for a loco or a long car, with an overhead crane.

This is mainly a large scale test of what I can do with 3D printing. I'll let you guys know how this turns out

I finished the workshop and ordered it, but forgot the overhead crane.

It's more of a filler than an adhesive. But it could probably work. It was the perfect application here because it would add strength and fill gaps, unlike putty. It's also machinable.
You can get it anywhere like Walmart, auto supply stores, Home Depot, etc.

That's very interesting 'cause I've never been able to use CA to effectively glue styrene to anything.  Metal-to-metal, no problem. but styrene to metal always seems to pop off at the most inopportune moment  .

Thanks for the scoop on JB Weld, however.  Sounds like a batter choice than Bondo.

Rix Rip #3 - Cheap rattle can didn't go on smooth on the railings. Need to take a small sandpaper pick to them and clean up the
grit. You can see it on this picture.












Also need to clean up, sharpen and refine the concrete supports. Styrene would've been better than wood on this.
But a pain to build those support casings. Used cheap Wally World chalks for weathering the lanes.

FWIW, Jim, 855's are nearing release from a fellow in the UK who is quite talented in 3D printing. He has several models available on Shapeways. I have two of his DD35 shells on the bench waiting for the roundtuit, and I have to tell you that in the high-res ("FXD") output, these are good models. I'm looking forward to completing them once I get the layout room project out of the way. Here's a thread discussing the high-res output using the DD35 shells as examples.

The upcoming C855 parts will also include the necessary bits to splice the U50 chassis, and etched brass railings, grabs and other details. He and I have discussed other UP doubles including the U50C. James is quite the double-diesel fan and is a member here on TRW, so I look forward to more great things.

I do remember that photo, and after all these years, I remember you too.   

Great thing about our hobby - the people we meet, the memories that we make.

Even as the next generation of 'younger guns' comes along that show all of us new, different, even better modeling...... it's
great to know we all are creating memories that last a lifetime.

I added a bit of white to the blue when I airbrushed it. It'll still get a very light fade though.

Jim, somewhere our paths have crossed before because in a box somewhere downstairs I have one of your GP30B shells.

I had to rework a junction and needed direct supervision. I guess she thought I was stringing catenary.
