Another Canadian designer who really needs to be on this list is my friend Steve Hunter and his store on Shapeways:

Steve is an incredible modelmaker who also brings a very strong design and engineering background to his projects. He models the Prince Edward Island railway in HO and I'm thrilled to see some of his projects, like the CN double-ended plow, make it into the N scale section of his store. He is very thorough in his research and his work really showcases the potential for this media, in N. Not just great rolling stock, but neat details like N scale lobster traps.

I have visited this forum several times and finally decided to register. Some 10 years ago I had to prioritize and I shoved all my N scale stuff onto a shelf and in some boxes. Around christmas I started building again with my son. I started making some stuff on Shapeways and that's turned into a whole new hobby for me. I make stuff I want to have on my layout (someday). I am a civil engineer and I go for mostly industrial stuff and MOW type stuff. I currently have a small yard on a 2'x3' shelf. In that yard I have a maintenance facaility and room for my MOW contractor.

southernnscale has a nice variety of N and Z pproducts, and has done very nice custom work for me. www.shapeways.com/designer/southernnscale.

Stony Smith (already mentioned above) has also done some nice custom work, especially for moderately difficult things like seaplanes.

It's funny how some designers wont offer other scale products in N.  I know it's not as simple as simply scaling a product up or down in software and slapping it back on the site; but it is vastly easier than creating tooling.  And the possibility of increased sales shold appeal to a designer, no?

Similarly, I am meeting resistance in designers offering FXD, which confounds me.  While most of his stuff is Z scale (and his shop not geared to help N scalers by clearly identifying N scale models), the aforementioned Southernscale has a P&H 1055B excavator in N that I'd like.  FXD would heighten the boom detail so I asked if he'd offer the product in this material and apparently he designed the original to use so much material that FXD would double its price, which is already at 33 and change.  OK you obviously don't want money...

Seems odd  [size=78%]  [/size]Maybe he's concerned he'd cut into his margin or reduce demand at the higher price--but all's needed is to offer both versions.  If he's using a straight percentage for his markup, he'd make a better profit selling the FXD version.


There might be additional design work needed for FXD, but on my models converted there was no additional work, just a material change.

I can see no reason why not to offer in both materials, it only takes a bit of time to set it up, all my models are now offered in  both, there is a slight problem in as much as customers seem to get confused when there are more than one type of material, I am trying to get Shapeways to make it more obvious that there is a choice.

The design parameters are the same for both materials so that should not make a reason for not offering in both.
