If by safety caps you mean that white plastic part of the lid, I cut all mine off and just use the regular metal cap that is under it. Oh and I refill it with a gallon of MEK.

I actually reused the lid from the old bottle and threw that safety cap away.

Being a solvent, will it not eat through a ziploc eventually.  Wrong kind of plasic?

You got it.  But using a plastic bag instead of actually fixing the problem is not a good solution.  :|

As other said, when I get some container with a safety cap or lid I always remove the safety part (It is too much hassle to bother with the safety caps and there are only adults in the house).

Did your bottle always stink (leak) or is is something that developed recently?  Is the cap metal/plastic or all plastic?  How about the bottle? Glass?

Pete,  you might want to buy another can of MEK - methylene chloride evaporates much faster.  If you are used to the way MEK works (especially when gluing large areas), you might not like methylene chloride.

I know. And you can still get MEK, just not from the big box stores. I've got a gallon in Alabama, and a gallon in Ohio. I use about 3 oz. per month, sometimes more with a big project where I'm laminating big sheets of styrene. I think I'm good for a while. I'm always looking for suggestions for slower evaporation rates for big pieces or faster evaporation rates when I need an instant stick. Sometimes getting painted brass railings to stick to painted styrene is a problem. Yes, sand off the damn paint is the solution, but sometimes that is very hard to do without leaving marks along a nice 36" line.

Testors had an issue a couple of years ago that the lids on the bottles were not being put on all the way, and there was leakage. My local pusher in Calif have several boxes of cement come in that stunk and there were half and empty bottles in there. Must have not found a way to fix that.

Perfect!  So it was the cap all along. Good to know.  I'm keeping the old bottle til I no longer need it.  :)

Looks like you picked the wrong weekend to stop sniffing glue.  I am highly disappointed that this thread went almost 2 full pages without anyone beating me to one of the best lines from a movie full of them. Y'all are slacking off.   :o

My advice is take the bottle and stash it in Peteski's cubicle at work in an unused drawer.  It is a $3 bottle of cement.  Go buy another one. You could probably solve the problem at Michaels or Hobbytown. No eBay even needed.

Bring it on - I actually like that smell!  Reminds me of my misspent youth.  ;)

I prefer the citrus like smell of the tube glue myself. Melted  more than a few cheap Dollar Store 1/72 scale airplane models together with that stuff. Also worked good to be sure they flamed all the way down when we blew em out of the sky throwing them off the roof.

And the pyromaniacs reveal themselves!

A whole fleet of model ships launched out into Lake Cochituate filled with lighter fluid and glue. The results were not Hollywood quality.

Many airplanes stuffed with firecrackers and hurled over the waters of Lake Cochituate, with similar disappointment about my special effects efforts. They just split at the glue lines.

Now, my 25 mm howitzer was a frightening success.

Remember this was early 1960s, when the nation was rocket crazy, so a four foot long barrel mounted in a block of concrete would launch a CO2 cartridge stuffed with black powder and scraped match heads with a frightening PHHHUUUMPPPP!
