Testors liquid cement stinking up my car and my basement.

So I know that you lose half of the bottle to evaporation but this is ridiculous. I can smell it walking down the stairs to the basement. Same child proof cap as my old battle which did lose some but not like this. (Yes it's on very tight.)

Anyone experiencing the same?

Is Tenax7r used for the same type of assembly? I have a bottle of it, which I bought for another kind of plastic, but it doesn't off gas at all. I'm thinking this may be the last bottle of Testors I buy.

Thanks.

Nope. I never have any problems with it. And I don't even make a Herculean attempt to screw the cap back on after I use it.

Hmm... the plot thickens...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.
"It works! It works!"

I wish it would thicken enough to stop the leak. I'll try the cap on my old bottle.

Have never used the Testors or any other liquid cement. I only use Tenax-7R. The only problem is we can no longer get it here in Canada because there is no french on the bottle... gotta love the Canadian government. There is a new product you might want to try Craig and it is called "The same stuff" it is the same as Tenax-7r and Ambroid Pro Weld.

There are more than half a dozen types of liquid cements out there. Any liquid chemical which will melt polystyrene is a liquid cement (whether it is put in a little expensive bottle marked "liquid cement" is irrelevant).

Testors liquid cement (in glass bottles) is mostly (or all) MEK.
Tenax and Ambriod ones are basically Methylene Chloride.
Tamiya liquid cements are mostly acetone.

These chemicals can easily be purchased in larger quantities (for much lower price) at your local hardware store.

While all liquid cements work by "welding" styrene, they have different evaporation rates which makes them useful for various types of joints. MEK is the slowest evaporating one and Methylene Chloride is the fastest.  I use all the various liquid cements I described above, choosing the one that will work the best a specific application.

Oh God , now something else to force off the market because of smell .  When I was a kid we ran in the fog of the skeeter trucks , used benzine ( still have some ) , nibbled lead paint , and whacked each other with asbestos pipe insulation tubes . Never hurt me , in fact I was able to grow a third leg out of my neck .

Store it in a sealed zip-lock bag or wrap in plastic wrap between uses.

Use Testor's and Tenax for years. Had a bottle of Tenax that evaporated after a few uses, had over-tightened the cap and crushed the seal.

If you can smell the cement with the cap closed then there is a problem.

This is a bottle of the Testors cement I had for at least 20 years.  Whatever is still left in the bottle is the original cement. I never had a problem with the evaporation or smell from a closed bottle. When I close it, I screw the lid on snug but not overly tight.  The gasket in the lid is soft transparent plastic.

I've reused Testors cement bottles to hold paint, and it lasted for years.  Like Peteski, I've never had a bottle evaporate, or smelled the cement while the bottle was closed.  Open, yes, it stinks...

Peteski:  That is an old bottle.  The one I'm using is one of a bunch bought several years ago, but they're the new round bottles.  I have some of the square ones, mostly full of diluted artist acrylics for scenery, and they're still water-tight after longer than I can remember.

I knew it is MEK, I don't know other solvents could do the same thing with different evaporation rates.

I put the cap from my older bottle on and it's fine now. But it sure won't last 20 years!  It still evaporates. I feel like it's been doing it ever since they changed to those stupid safety caps.

I didn't know Tenax is no longer available. But then I guess it's irelevant if I can just buy the chemicals at Peteski suggests.

If by safety caps you mean that white plastic part of the lid, I cut all mine off and just use the regular metal cap that is under it. Oh and I refill it with a gallon of MEK.

Never had this problem. I make my own: 75% MEK, 25% toulene. Leave the cap off all the time, and it evaporates, but slowly. Of course, I use about a 3 oz. bottle (or more) per month. Guess I'm going to have to use methyl chloride once I finish the gallon of MEK. Maybe my sense of smell has been damaged after all these years.

I have never had a problem with evaporation or smell when the bottle was closed.  In fact, I just threw away an empty bottle of Testor's liquid cement that I had for years.  It was emptied by use, not evaporation.  I replaced it with a bottle of Polly S liquid cement that was not nearly as strong at forming a bond.  Fortunately, I found another bottle of Testor's liquid cement locally to replace that.
