Hmm.  $100 a sheet for 4" foam stacked like a wedding cake, or use 1" set vertically and build up 24" inches or more with one sheet...  You can carve the flat surface, too, you know...

Ah! Of course. Even if it were available as an "each" item, it would still be darned near $100 a sheet. Nice friend!

Failing having wonderful friends , I'm fine with laminating 2". I've had great results with Gorilla Glue, and I have a gallon of that super-tacky Glidden primer I want to try on the next foam project.

4" styrofoam is about twice the price of 2" foam or about . In my area you get the price of the 1" foam and multiply by the thickness you need and it's close . I am in a contractor in the Montreal area and buy a lot of this . On my job site the leftover foam is not going in the garbage ...

I've never seen 4" foam, just up to 2" here.  The sell really big foam as floats for docks.  I think it is 12", but in smaller dimensions than the foam you get for walls.

My work for the weekend has been on a santa fe 4-8-2, an early up challenge, and getting a new mechanism ready for a 3450class santa fe 4-6-4 and a gs-5. Now time to pack it all into my tackle box so I can work on everything in my hotel room for the week of work!

2" seems to be the typical thickness found around here...WHEN I can find it.
Luckily a couple years ago I found a guy selling a big stack of 3" blue foam (full sheets and scraps). It was Dow DeckMate.
He had a lot and wanted quite a bit for it but it was still cheaper than buying new. He wouldn't split it up (I didn't want to scraps) but I ended up buying it all. I should be set for layout projects for a few years to come.

A side note is that a few years ago, it was not very expensive. I think it was $12 for a 2" x 2' x 8' sheet. Then oil prices went up and they explained that it was dependent on oil prices. Would be nice to know if it has plummeted recently with the oil prices?!

Lowes here in central PA has 2" x 4' x 8' for $35 a sheet.  So no, it doesn't seem to have come down.

It's just a detailed bachmann light mountain with a second sand some added and the cab windows modified to better represent the correct cab. There was a great write up in one of the n-scale steam addendums that show you how to make one. I can not remember the year or author for that certain article off the top of my head right now though. Also lorren Perry has a good steam detailing set of articles in n-scale magazine that shows how he detailed his atsf 4-8-2s.

Puddington:  OK, no knives during Maple Leafs games, but that doesn't mean you can't decal then.  Cutting the labels out ahead of time isn't any problem, as they're all the same anyway, and don't have to go on a particular car.  Then put them on during the game.  No sharp objects required.

Unless you're Bryan, who probably prints individualized labels for each car!

Yeah, the market will pay that much so they'll just pocket the materials savings. Would be nice to see a price drop though in the future!

Nice job with the LED's, Ryan! I purchased some of those 0402's and did even try, opting for prewired ones instead.

Chicken45, that scrap yard looks great! How did you do the scrap pile?

Thanks for the shout out, The main piles are resin that I painted and did black wash on. The curls are real metal. My uncle has a metal shop and he gave me the shavings from the drill press. I had to wash them and break them into smaller pieces to have them look more to scale (lots of small cuts on my hands.) The fence is a metal casting. I used camo brown spray paint and rusting powders then sealed with dull coat.
