MTL heavyweight baggage car

PRR modelers are lagging behind Erie modelers by a good amount.  you guys better step up and buy many and buy often

I sent my email requesting 4 from my LHS (Skipgear) so that order should show up soon.  And 3D-7P2 trucks would be nice, but I already bought 12 pr  in anticipation of project so I won't gripe if they don't.   But it would be nice.  Really nice.

True   I have a research packet on SOO and would love to do them.  We are working our way through past releases but I know we are about to schedule other road series to run...keep you toes crossed.

Joe, has there been any thought to making some Soo Line passenger cars? Would go really well with the CPR series you've done...

Erie switched to green & cream after they bought E8's painted this way in 1951. PA's and passenger equipment was painted to match. As for EL, who knows, it was official in 1960, so after that for maroon & grey paint.

Don't know anything about a "green & cream" scheme but many have forgotten that the lightweight cars ERIE bought were Pullman green before the TTG (two tone green) was adopted.  Most, if not all, modernized cars as well as the baggage - mail, mail - dorm and sleepers arrived in solid Pullman green which were later repainted into TTG...

Certainly, many baggage cars kept their all green paint jobs well into the mid-1950s, and while I do not have a photo, would not be surprised if some never were repainted prior to the merger.  On baggage cars, certainly any that had their doors redone with steel doors after 1951 would have been painted into the two-tone green scheme at that time.  Others were painted into 2 tone green with original or slightly modified wood doors- http://rr-fallenflags.org/el/pax/erie-be590bjh.jpg

I think for the time being I will settle for replacing "American Railway Express" with "Railway Express Agency" and await developments.  Once they have a single window coach (from the other thread, I am guessing this will happen sometime in the next couple years), I am hoping we see some cars in two-tone green.  In point of fact, with a single window coach, you could put out a set with baggage, 2 single window coaches, 10-1-2 (Lake Worth, as I recall), and have a pretty accurate Erie local.  And for that matter, the Erie mail-baggage bears no small resemblance to the CB&Q car we are anticipating: http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/erie610.jpg , http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll22/id/63268 - not sure if that is the exact prototype they are working on, but I am guessing its close.

With 6-6-4s and the Erie 10-5 readily available, and sides out there for the correct 10-6 (4029, is that right?), all that is missing are the remodeled coaches and diners- if we can get one of the resin casters on board to make some shells, a completely accurate NYC to Chicago Erie train could be a reality.

It's odd how some railroads do things differently. I have seen a SP horse car that still has all 6 wooden doors, but the roller bearing trucks have been switched to friction bearing trucks when it was converted to a MOW car

AFAIK ATSF even ran NYC baggage cars from Chicago to LA...

And the paint job is wrong for the fifties. And when did baggage cars stop having "American Railway Express" written on them?

I'll have to cancel the order and wait for a two tone Erie baggage car...

Or, you could paint one.  I suspect that, with all of the established roads on previous MTL heavyweight bodystyles, they are going to cycle those paint schemes on the baggage car long before they offer a second or third Erie scheme.

Looks like ARE was started during WWI, and its holdings passed to REA in 1929.

That would indeed make the MT paint scheme a heavily weathered rarity by the 1950s.

Now that Polly Scale is gone I have no idea what colours I should use. Any suggestions? I need at least three colours, one for cream, one for "green" (looks more blue-ish in the photos) and one for the yellow stripe.

I'm not sure where folks are getting their info...many Erie baggage cars stayed green all the way up to the EL merger...
yes, this car could and would be seen in ATSF transcon trains, specifically nos. 7&8...3&4...all the way to LA, SF, Houston, etc...
All I need to do, to have the correct car in my 1957-era ATSF 'Fast Mail, is to remove the American Railway Express lettering, and replace it with Railway Express Agency...

I'd buy them, but Soo had a ton of Barney and Smith cars, more than the metal heavyweights, and a lot of in house shopped cars.
