Thomas , an SMD LED wouldn't generate any heat as long as it's got the right resistor in front of it. If you use a 1/4 watt and/or a high enough value resistor heat won't be a problem and you have tons of space for it in there. That will look awesome!
That really looks like a great kit. What is the roof material supplied with kit constructed from?

Not N scale, but I've finished an EM gauge Manning Wardle kit. My first adventure in commercial kit building. I think it came out rather wellI do need to get back to N at some point...

Britain has weird gauges.
Britain has weird gauges. They started out with engineering scales, Gauge 3, Gauge 2, Gauge 1, Gauge O. Then they tried to make in smaller and went to half-O (HO). But electric motors in the '20s were quite large and British locomotives are quite small, so the scale was enlarged from 3.5mm/ft to 4mm/ft (OO). But, unfortunately, they kept the same track gauge (16.5mm). After WW2 some modellers wanted more realistic track including a closer gauge. EM gauge was established at 18mm and then grew slightly to 18.2mm where it remains. It is quite a popular scale amongst people who actually build models. The track is much better looking than OO but it is fairly easy to get it to work. The people who insist on everything being absolutely to scale tend to model in P4 with a track gauge of 18.83mm and much tighter tolerances.
