The next winter is coming, so lets get prepared... 

Started working on a rotary snow plow from Tichy and I'm trying to get the wheel running.



The motor  -  an old Arnold - fits quite nicely.
I'm not quite sure how to connect the motor with the wheel, maybe with a tube.

I'm also thinking of installing a SMD LED in the lamp but I'm not sure if it would get too warm.



Any thoughts?

I will paint the whole thing black and it will be lettered for the Canadian National.

SMD LEDs run cool. No worries.

Might want to think about using a geared motor to turn the blades--real ones turn relatively slowly.

I'll use an IM F7B for power pick up without a motor but there will be a decoder in it. So hopefully I will get the motor running quite slowly.

Completed a hybrid PRR K4.  Minitrix shell, Kato C55 chassis, Bachmann tender.  Credit goes to Ebit, who showed how to do this on the Atlas forum.  Still do not know Ebit's real name, so I was not able to thank him.



Is this prototypically accurate?  No.  Is it good enough for me?  Yes, until something better comes along.  Performance is smooth, even at very low speeds.

Added a little extra weight in the boiler.  Also squeezed a TCS Z2 decoder into the smokebox.  The decoder is programmed to reduce the top speed, which is well over 150mph without it.  The engine will easily pull 9 heavyweight cars on level grade.

If you can squeeze this $12 gearhead (12V) motor in the plow, it will turn the blade very slowly.

That really looks like a great kit.  What is the roof material supplied with kit constructed from?

During this last week of my summer holidays, I have been working to try and get some long term projects toward the finish line.

I suffered two significant setbacks with my scratchbuilt model of cook diner car BCOL 6508.  The ORO decals I have been holding on to for ages were the wrong size and looked obviously so on the model.  New decals had to be rendered and printed.  More significantly, at some point one of the scratchbuilt vestibule steps vanished off the model, taking a piece of the floor with it.  No idea when or where it went.  No option but to build a replacement.  In anticipation of another forthcoming passenger car build, I made four:




These are the Pullman three tread variety.  Of ourse, the one which vanished off the model had to be the one with the quarter round housing for the brake chain on the top step.  Here is the replacement:




The missing piece of floor was replaced, and the new step glued in place.

It now requires a coat of black paint to blend with the rest of the vestibule floor and underframe.


I also completed edging all of the windows for my three museum train coaches with a silver marker.  Cutting out and edging 72 windows is something I would not care to repeat.  Here is a trial fit of one side with windows edged - the effect is subtle but noticeable:




I also cut out strips of styrene to go behind the windows and represent the blinds.  These coaches had sheets of plywood along the inside walls to protect the museum artifacts so the blinds were almost always down.  These strips will be painted the appropriate colours:




So next up is window pane installation, window blind installation, and decals.

Thomas , an SMD LED wouldn't generate any heat as long as it's got the right resistor in front of it. If you use a 1/4 watt and/or a high enough value resistor heat won't be a problem and you have tons of space for it in there. That will look awesome!

I know your pain with those windows Tim. I did 7 coaches!

Wow - that is 168 windows.  I would like to see photos of how those turned out; perhaps you could email some to me.  I am wondering - what did you use for adhesive and did you put it on the coach body or the window pane?  I have been trying to think of a way to minimize getting adhesive on the clear window material.  Using something which dries clear seems to be in order . . . . . as long as it has sufficient staying power.

I'm not 100% sure but it might be too long. I looked up other ones but they are even longer than that one.
