Just when you want this thread to die... I dig it right back up.

Over the weekend at Chantilly I purchased a few things for the layout.
The first being a Shire Scenes etched horse-cart kit, and the second being some cast resin bridge abutments that I can easily cut one or two for use in making the bridge abutments and the one support column.

Once the abutments and the column are installed I can complete all the sculptamold work, and from there I can at least finish the ballasting.

So I have yet to get the bridge abutments cut, but more sculptamold work is soon to come.

I guess no one is following this thread any longer, but I shall soldier on nonetheless.

Ok, I need some real help on this.

Since this is only my second "real" layout, I'm kinda-sorta learning as I go along.

On my last layout, there were two bridges, but I never got very far with them, so I never needed to install abutments.

With the long bridge, I'm going to need two stone abutments and one stone support column. Because of the small size, it's either I have to get crafty and make them, or modify an existing product.

Well, I was given some Woodland Scenics retaining walls recently, and since are a better thickness than the Chooch ones I had picked up at Chantilly, the WS ones are more preferable.

My only problems are that I have no idea how the heck bridge abutments are supposed to be installed, let alone whether or not the retaining wall pieces are ok to be used as such.

So, I chopped them to the right height, and I used one to take two test photos to get some feedback and advice from y'all.




So I'll leave it up to y'all to correct me.

Oh... oops.
I wanted to be correct and go with a stone bridge, and what do I go and do... I destroy an expensive bridge. 
Technically I should probably go with a completely stone bridge, but I liked the wood deck too much to try and remove it.

This is why I can't have nice things.



Actually, I value the layout highly. The fact that you're the one who built it, and so graciously gave it to me, makes it worth it's weight in gold to me.
I treasure it as much as my brass PRR H10.

No photos. Just kinda shooting from the hip on this one.
I figure two stone abutments, one stone support in the middle, and the wood deck stays.

Seems overly wide and oddly shaped for a tiny bridge abutment. Recommend you work from photos--"shooting from the hip" is risky unless you're very familiar with the subject.

I could tell it was too wide, so I'll probably thin that down.

That's what reference photos will tell you.

This may serve as a starting point. Or possibly this, this and this. Note that the abutments are quite conservative in size and construction.

That's similar to what I was finding. Those photos are actually even better than everything I found.

Looks like I got a lot more cutting to do before these are ready for painting, weathering, and permanent installation.

they are not as wide but have great detailing
even if you cannot cut in half, you could bury one face
into the terrain on each side.
