Meet the SD40N - On the left, #1612.  #3401 is an unmodified unit.



According to "The Diesel Shop", the SD40N designation has been applied to SD40-2s which have been rebuilt at UP's Jenks Shops in Little Rock AR. 

These locomotives have been rebuilt from the SD40-2 to include a ZTR Nexsys III-i control system, hence the SD40-N.  The Nexsys replaces all the dash 2 cards and includes an AESS system.  The project is ongoing.  According to roster updates, they are doing 10-15 per month.  UP has a lot of SD40-2s.

Major spotting differences are the rear mounted horns and the cab AC unit, and of course ditch lights which were not mandated (I don't think) when the locos were originally manufactured.  (early 70s)  Pilot mount is correct for these two numbers. Rear number boards are blanked off.

#1612 was made from the Kato #3379.  The actual #3379 was removed from the UP roster in 1999.  But #1612 is a snoot as was the #3379, so it works.

#1617 will be made from the Kato #3401 - exactly as in real life.



The ditchlights are sunny white nano LEDs from Ngineering, placed in modified housings from Shapeways (MPScaleModels).  The horns are BLMA modified by making a stand.  The Prime AC unit is also BLMA.   And I added MU hoses by BLMA.  The headlights on the Digitrax DCC boards were replaced with sunny white.

HAW!  Sure looks like it!  Wonder when that happened?  Wonder how long I've been running it that way?

There was no need to take it apart that far, so I left it the way it's been.  Thanks for that, I'll fix it like REAL soon.

I did not really get much model work done so far this weekend, other than getting a parts unit for my PRR Trainmaster, but I did manage to run trains at a NJS display in Egg Harbor City, NJ. Along with running a Chessie System manifest (sorry, no picture), I also displayed my brass PRR E8 imported by Oriental Limited. Hopefully I will have more pictures tomorrow, and I apologize for the terrible pictures my cell phone takes...

Between work and remodeling our master bath, haven't had much time to work on the layout.  Did however start installing some Blue Shale I received from SMike.  I'm looking for feedback on whether or not I have added enough or too much so far.  Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  This isn't a finished product, just work in progress.  As always, thanks for looking!

David- Incredible rock.

As for me, I met up with a couple of buddies, Doug and Claus, for some railfanning at Sherman's Creek this afternoon.

First up, an M1 came by with a mixed freight.


Next, an E6 shot by with a commuter run while another M1 ran by with a TrailerTrain on an adjacent track.


We jumped in a canoe for a different perspective, and caught a T1 passing by.


We rowed as fast as we could to shore and jumped into the car for a slightly faster than legal run to HUNT, where we caught the T1 again.


Many thanks to Doug Nelson for a very fun afternoon.

On30.  What am I thinking?  Here's half the fleet of engines; there's another Forney, a 2-6-6-2 and a 4-6-0 lurking as well.  The coach I painted, and the pulpwood rack is my first attempt at light weathering.  Oh boy.
