Walthers N Scale Vulcan Manufacturing is back!

With apparently very little fanfare (perhaps I missed it in the chaos of my most recent move), Walthers seems to have restocked its N scale Vulcan Mfg Co kit.  I just bought a pair on eBay, but it seems to be in stock at Walthers and at MBK.

With all of the awesome industrial modeling going on here I thought folks should know if they don't already.  My pair is slated for a future expansion of the Juniata Division, and may form the nucleus of either Bethlehem Steel's Steelton, PA rail plant or the Standard Steel railroad wheel plant in Burnham near Lewistown.

Either way, git 'me while the gittin's good!

This is a great kit to have on hand, and expands easily to make more prototypically-sized structures.

The only ones I see listed at MBK are HO. Does the N scale version have the crane or is that just in HO?

Best wishes, Dave

I noticed that too. In any case, here is the Walthers N scale link:

Hmm... I only buy kits
that are associated with
bananas in some way...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Good ole Walthers... Classic move. Rerun a fairly popular kit but don't tell anyone you're doing it!

It was a good one....I built one as was, and kit bashed three more into a huge flat which has survived and may find a spot on the new IHB, hiding the CSX mainline behind several buildings.

I was in Toledo a month ago, and saw a building off I 75 that looked remarkably like Vulcan, which made me wonder if anyone ever figured out what/where the prototype for the building was?  It might have been a pretty common style, which partly explains the popularity of the building.

In the LHS yesterday, and I also saw the modern and old water towers are now built ups.  Also saw the Rail Rebuilder kit, and it has distinct possibilities for kit bashing along a wall I have.

But, with all that good stuff (none of which I could have built either of my urban themed layouts without....) someone still finds a way to kit bash (or just bash....)Wally in general.  I doubt that structure reruns really elicit the oohs and aaahs of a new loco style, nor are they mostly in immediate demand.  We buy them when we see them, just in case we see a possible need for a structure like it down the road.

BTW, an LHS told me years ago, they don't rerun any structures until they get 300 back orders.  No word on how many they actually do run when they decide to do it.  While I hate the $50 price tags (and up) for these little collections of molded plastic, when you figure that at even 500 such kits, and wholesale price of half the retail, that they are making a max of under $20,000 gross on these runs.  Even at 75% profit, with tooling paid for, that isn't all that much profit, is it?

And 75% is being very generous.

Glad it's back, regardless of if they announce it or not.

While there are several top-notch manufacturers doing locos and cars in N scale, Walthers has no peers when it comes to American industrial and urban structures.  Therefore while I don't get riled up when Walthers ignores N scale in trains, I get very excited when they throw us a structure or two.

Except that they're all too small.

Except that they're all too small.

That's why you buy more than one. Very easy to expand.

I think if they made them larger, they'd sell far fewer--too big for small layouts, too expensive for small budgets.

Several of us have asked whether this kit includes the crane, as seen in the HO version. Thanks for any information on this.

Best wishes, Dave

The crane structure you see in the photo is included, but no crane to ride up on those rails.
