I ordered a Athearn NACC car today.  As for the ends, the MTL 51ft Mech Reefer is fine. Just need to chop them off. I may ignore this, since I possess one of the very few slides of the DSDX ends! If I take it offline, who will know?

Well let us know the decision so I know whether to cancel my order for seven "My Hero" shirts with your face on it.  I didn't really understand my particular fascination with this car until I remembered I have to do the exact same thing with different sides for the CGW "Grocery" cars that were assigned to Cedar Rapids and interchanged at Waterloo.

Here's the DSDX BOOB-spot per one of the photos you collected.  It's interesting that the Return To and door instructions are Milwaukee style lettering, maybe added later than the as-built NYC style lettering.  I wonder if the 2000 series cars got these additions as well?

I have the NYC font traced from railroad drawings. If you have a project that needs this style, let me know.

I went through what I had and I can't top what you you've already got.  There really isn't a good 60's version of the r/3/4 with a high brake wheel.  In a perfect world, the Atlas Precision car could be used but with the molded detail it's just not worth it.

Go with the Mechanical Reefer.  Apart from the ladder it looks really good for the picture you posted.  I always thought they seemed wide, but I guess it's just that the sides stick out.  I measured across the side rivets (I can't promise I got in there perfect) and I got within a scale inch of the end piece for the IM 50' cars.

In case you're wondering about the IM r/3/4 ends, they're for the 10' car and don't really have the right shape on the corrugations anyway.

And yes, by all means don't chop a $20 car if you don't have to.  Never hurts to ask.
