The LIRR Industrial Service, Inc. shelf layout

After some 5 week life challenges, I finally had the chance to do some work on the layout and details. First, I painted, weathered, and added cables to the open and closed grapple hooks. I need to make a ball of scrap to put inside the closed grapple.





I also lengthened the mooring tires and bollards to allow for another barge location closer to the newly added siding for more loading and unloading capability on the waterfront. I’m thinking of designing and printing a smaller vessel for the new mooring.





I also printed some more PRR style light post concrete piers for the WS streetlights that will be installed later on the extension across from the icing platform, between the branch line and the siding.

This episode of JFPTM (IYKYK) finds an old PRR H10s on the branch line with a very short local. I added the fencing and gates to the scrap yard in temporary placement after spraying the panels with an old alcohol and ink weathering mix from a thread here. I like the effect that would surely happen from all of the filth and soot from steam locomotives passing by, and the way it hides the train partially from view.











Posed in the scrap yard entry gates are two incoming gons and one empty outgoing gon waiting for the 44 tonner to place them to go to their next destination.

New reduced 70’ barge acquisition for the IS, nah but really newly printed design to fit in front of the breakwall.

Here’s the scaled down barge I printed as the first model off the new printer, copied from the 85 footer in front of it. I needed something a bit smaller to fit in the water in front of the breakwall.





Just need to weather and letter like the other two and make a load, but I am thinking about leaving her unloaded, but dirty inside.

Got excited about the new barge, so I weathered it, decaled the IS herald, and finalized its placement. Love my new printer!

Meanwhile on the east side of the channel, I am preparing for filth in and around the scrap yard.

Finally added ground to the east side of the channel at the waterfront. Tried to weather (dirty up) around the scrap piles with an airbrush, not perfect, but I am happy. Added the bollards and placed the magnetic scrap piles back down. Need to add the office and equipment shop building. Next is ballasting the track, and installing the fencing I showed a while back.

Added some of the fencing and structures to the scrap yard. Took some new night shots as well. Need to ballast and fill between the tracks with filthy, rusty cinder/ballast and then add the tall pole lights there as well as in the main scrapyard. Then the next thing to do is add the gravel road across the tracks and the remainder of the fence/gates into the facility.

















I also finished up the c9nveyor, added coal to the belt and dumping into the barge. Also made a dumping shovel loader of coal falling into the chute.

Finished up the LIRR IS scrap yard. ballast gravel road, wood fencing and structures. All that is left are the yard lights and their connection and transformer feeds on the line poles in the background. Track has been cleaned and hopper tested for rolling quality and switching. This pretty much concludes the construction of the main layout, save for some human and vehicular details.

The extension will wait till fall as will the backdrop and bench work edging.

Backdating my Slvan Models tugboat kit to represent this LIRR version. Although the doors and port windows are close, they are obviously not the same, but good enough for me.  The biggest change is the pilot house, so I designed a little kit to make the wheelhouse a little smaller over the galley below. I also added the staircase from the lower deck to the upper deck. The two piece kit allows me to superdetail the interior of the wheelhouse with the Sylvan parts. The model will eventually be fully lighted with a crew. The stairway railing is a GMM observation railing folded to fit. Lots more details to add prior to paint.

The LIRR IS picked up a new depressed center flat for moving equipment between facilities. Printing a loading ramp now to run the machines up onto the car. After patching the original owner and renumbering, the management wants to add a wood deck to the dropped deck. They have some sweet reclaimed 4x16 boards that will serve that idea well. Light weathering after that.





The tugboat is also making progress as the pilot house received navigation light housings, drilled for a red and green LED, a forward searchlight, and an LED inside. The lower cabin now has a railing and is nearly ready for install. I am hoping that the ambient light from the pilot house above will illuminate the cabin below somewhat. It’s a good thing the model is hollow underneath so I can wire everything up in there. Think I am going to add a faint light in the engine room too adding some clear orange for the boiler glow.

I am really enjoying the boat build. It will get a printed huge LIRR hearted near the top of the stack, just like the prototype.

John, your modeling is really awesome as well, but if there’s one thing that’s really shining out from your build and this thread, it’s how much fun you’re having with this layout and the world you’re building. Really inspirational stuff!

@packers#1 , Thank you. That is a really thoughtful thing to say, it describes exactly what is happening as I go. Even if I only end up posing trains, that is enough for me.

Continued work on the LIRR tugboat for the layout.

3D printed a curved LIRR herald placard for the smokestack. Had to order white resin so I could scrape the red paint away. The red will get much darker when I weather the stack.



Also formed a spark arrestor for the stack using the fine screen I sold to some folks for fencing.





Made a whistle got the top of the pipe in front of the stack, and printed two distinct engine room air intakes. The ones from the kit were somewhat disappointing looking.



Smokestack installed along with the rear flag mast, it is brass tube with the rear navigation led at the top. The flag mast needs added detail, but not before paint. The front whistle wire has the white forward navigation led lamp and wire exiting out of the bottom of the deck. Also added the rail around the main cabin. The model is almost ready for paint which will be a PRR Tuscan variant, based on the linked photo above. The green starboard and red port navigation LEDs will be added after paint to the top of the pilot house.
