Brain Fart - Opening Industry Gates

Ok am having a brain fart on this...and I don't know why...I know its elementary school simple machines stuff.

I want to have a dual gate security gate opened by a slow motion motor, in this case a servo. I am using a spare drive output on the turnout board I am using, so I want to use only one motor to open the gates. Two motors to open the gates is easy, but for some reason I am spacing out how to build the linkage to do it with one motor.

Are these slide out gates or swing gates?

How tall are the gates?

A lot depends on what sort of action you're getting out of the servo.

If you're going with a rotating action, and you have a pulley on one gate, you might put an identical pulley on the other gate, and run a string/belt/chain between them with a half-twist (to make a figure eight). That will reverse the direction of rotation of the second pulley, and thus make the gates swing outward or inward together.

Should just need some sort of "Z" linkage.

Swing gates.

Would be about the standard 8' high, Looking at using BLMA chainlink material.

Ian, the gates in your drawing won't work unless the arms can stretch as the servo moves them open. :D  Even if they stretched, they wouldn't open nowhere close to 90 degrees (which is usually needed).

Here is the Z linkage others have mentioned.

May want to rotate the post arms 45° to the gates depending on which way the gate opens in your drawing, but yeah, that's the idea.

The recently-late Wulfgang Dudler had a nifty set of operating gates on his Westport Terminal layout.

And he did it again on his Diamond Valley module:

It's Horrible Oversized but works

Alternate options.....may be easier to fit in certain spaces and less complex to set up.

****OOPS - The Right arm on the Left drawing should be pointed 45 degrees up, not down.

Are these slide out gates or swing gates?

Sorry, but the first thing that came to mind was ... "African swallow or European swallow?"  :D
